It's a good thing you're not the guy in charge of programming on BF 3 lol.

Making a game "for the future" is a sure way to get fired since it will most likely be a flop. You would have to invest millions of dollars in the graphics engine and you'll never make a profit. People buy games in the present and your objective is to sell them now at $50 not after 3 years (when hardware catches up) for $5.

Not to mention that the general trend is people will buy more popular yet less graphically intensive games as opposed to system hogs.
