Short answer, yes. Long answer, maybe. If you can, I'd recommend going to your local Best Buy and trying out all the various low-end models in your hands to see which you like the most and which is most comfortable to shoot. The camera you hate to use will be the camera you leave at home.

What's other camera that you recommend?

I'd put it between the Nikon D3100, Canon Rebel T2i, and Canon Rebel T3. All three cameras are covered in the guide in my sig.

All three are excellent beginner cameras and are definitely more than enough with their kit 18-55 lens for any beginner.

The main drawback of the D3100 is that it lacks an in-body autofocus motor. This means that lenses without autofocus motors (Nikon's AF lenses) won't be able to autofocus on the D3100. Lenses that do include a motor however (Nikon's AF-S lenses) will be able to autofocus.

If you can get over that fact, personally I'd just select the camera that feels the most comfortable in your hands. All three are excellent and ergonomics is most likely the most significant difference you'd notice between them all.

Yeah, for your first camera, ergonomics should be high priority. I'd say right now the T2i is probably your best bet, but TBH, you can't really go wrong with anything.

The hell.

What is a T3. I was just getting accustomed to knowing that the T3i was out.

The T3/1100D is the successor to the XS/1000D. In my opinion, it's a T1i with a swivel screen and lower resolution sensor. Great camera for the price still.

On an unrelated note, I'm starting to hate the American Rebel naming scheme. The EOS xxxD/xxxxD scheme is so much simpler!

They were released at the same time, but the T3i reached the states before the T3 did.

My gf just bought a 2mo-used Panasonic Lumix GH1 ($580 for body + lens from ebay), it's more of a compact DSLR, so it's much more portable than the Nikons and Canons mentioned. You may be able to use custom firmware that lets you increase the bitrate of HD video recording, granted the firmware in the camera is old enough. It's in about the same price range as the T3/t3i if you buy it at full retail price.

Not sure if the video is from a custom firmware or official, but it's beautiful regardless.
