Do I need an external soundcard/DAC?

Thread Starter
Hello guys,

I am buying a pair studio monitors.
Is an internal soundcard ,like the Xonar DX, enough for best sound?

Or should I buy an external soundcard(DAC) with it?
Like the M-Audio Fast Track Pro?

I am not recording anything...
I just want the best sound quality.

If you will be using it for mostly music listening, get a DAC. If you are using it for gaming, get a soundcard. If you will be using it evenly..... get a hybrid?

Digitial to Analog Converter.

Sound cards have DACs, External solutions have DACs. Many people refer External DACs as just "DACs" though.

Depends on the type of speakers you're getting. Depends on their connections. Depends on how good you want your source to be for your speakers.

Sure, get an external DAC, why not?

If you care about sound, get an external DAC. If you care about fancy brand names for "gaming" technology, get a soundcard.

Honestly, it's only an issue of money. If you have the cash, an external unit will always be better.

I was expecting somebody to mention receivers being a DAC and amp. I think I'm the only one who cares. I can recommend you some. You can also go to www.hometheatergears.com. It only has AV receivers. If you want stereo receivers, you're out of luck for that site. Harman Kardon, Yamaha, Onkyo, and some other brands (I think Marantz and Denon) sell stereo receivers.

I was just giving the general consensus when it comes to this kind of thing. I personally have an external DAC, but I think that sound cards come with things that are useful to gamers (dolby headphone etc).

Heavy assumption. Both are not mutually exclusive.

Yup, soundcards can get you 90% of the way there imo. They just have certain limitations that cannot be overcome due to their internal nature. You can find plenty of external DACs that perform much worse than some internal cards.
