everyone seems to be asking the same question... case temps may be the culprit here

Is it possible that your TIM hasn't cured yet? trying to think what might cause this kind of effect.

Or maybe the cooler itself is affecting airflow in your system?

+1 for this. AS5 takes up to 200 hours to "cure"(not sure if this is what your using, just an example) others take less.

Sounds like you miss-seated the cooler/too much paste/not enough paste.

Personaly I shoot for a close to ambiant temp for an idle..Comp sits just a few degree's above room temp(2-3 at most) at stock clocks with a coolermaster hyper 212+...as the other members pointed out Idle is unimportant as long as its lower than your load temps

What is your ambient temperature? If it is hot in your house then that might explain high idle temps
It is always the same temperature in my room, so that shouldn't be the problem.

I vote airflow. For whatever reason maybe the airflow in the case was slightly better geared for the top-down cooler. Try changing up your case air flow to better feed the tower cooler.

Horizontal or vertical mount/ exhausting back or top ?

When i went from my s963 with a vantec tornado to this a70, my idle temps increased but my load temps dropped also. I think the reason for this is because heatsinks have what i would call a thermal ceiling. Lets say you put your cpu underload, at somepoint, depending on how much heat you put into the heatsink, the heat will get too great for the heatsink for effectively remove heat from the cpu. I think the higher idle temp is a byproduct of having less airflow, but having bigger/more heatpipes really shine when they need to, and thats when your cpu gets hot. This is just my opinion, i could be completely crazy and wrong

Also, Curing time for thermal paste, case flow, mounting position etc also play a factor in temps. Bottom line, i dont care what my idle is, all i care about is what happens when my cpu is hot, and this a70 does a very good job there.

This method does not work well for the funky slotted base of the Hyper 212+. This guide http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=5 is a really good guide on applying TIM for these heatpipe direct touch coolers. Alternately, and as recommended by CoolerMaster, spread a thin surface accross the top of the cpu IHS surface, though this method is frowned upon for the creation of air bubbles in the contact area. I've tried both with my Hyper 212+ and either was the same. With a 3.8 OC my i7 idles at about 40c and hits up to 80c running prime max heat. With stock clocks it idles at 30c or less depending on the room temp.
