So this is a 480SC vs a stock 6950? What is the exact 6950 model?

Only drawback about crossfire and SLI is the possibility of some games not working correctly with both cards, so you'll have to go back to single card mode. However, two mid-range cards will beat out a single powerful card in terms of performance, though at the cost of higher power draw (also heat) and possible driver/game drawbacks mentioned. Most people who do crossfire or SLI don't have many problems, especially if they install them correctly.
This is another good point. While I wouldn't recommend 2 460s against a 480/570, 2 560Tis (basically as powerful as 2x 470) are a nice SLI setup that will chew a lot of the newest games out there on max settings while having a great price/performance value. Also, 560Tis are GF116 and they consume less power/produce less heat. However, I don't think that 2 560s will be affordable for him.

I don't have an exact model yet, anything that can be flashed to a 6970 will do the job,I am however liking the Msi Twin Frozr.

Thanks for the help so far guys, but as I already mentioned in my initial post I am not interested in SLI/Crossfire setups so I will have to settle for a single card.

@SHNS0;The 570 costs around €360 so it's not in my price range.I think that I have read that it has some problems, not sure though. If it's much better than the 480/6950 I might consider giving it another look.

Buy reference 2GB and you will get the shader unlock, 99,9% chance.

By your logic: there's a chance your 480 won't overclock at all. Yes, it is indeed true if we should listen to Blacklac.

Isn't the cooler bad on reference 6950's?I think I read somewhere that the Msi Twin Frozr III is flashable.

At least I'm not in a rush,I have some time to decide until next week.So far there are 3 competitors

6950 280€
GTX480 SE/SOC 300€
GTX570 350€ (stretches my budget but looks like a good card)

I think I will leave the 480 out because it's old, hot, loud and power hungry.

That leaves me with 2 options,a flashable 6950 or a 570.

I am buying new hardware only when I have too (and that is every ~3years).I was not considering an upgrade now,but my monitor died and my old GPU won't be able to handle 19x10 res.

What I want is a card that will last for as long as possible, and will be able to max most games for a couple of years.

Now,out of these 2,a flashable 6950 and a non reference 570,which will be able to achieve this?Which suits my system more?

I'd get a 570 now and go SLI as soon as you upgrade the rest of your hardware. Core2quads are getting old now, y'know
