You sir obviously haven't raced with cars.

Racing grade kit: $400.
Racing grade ESC+motor: $300
Racing grade battery pack (ROAR approved): $90
Racing grade transmitter+receiver: $190
Proper steering servo: $40
Racing grade tyre+rim set: $60
Adequate charger+balancer+power supply: $150

That being racing grade. Enthusiast grade, lower the ESC+motor to 200, the kit to 250, and put a $50 battery.

If you're beginning in the RC car racing (obviously the above was pro racing, not newb racing), you won't go under $400 without taking into consideration the battery and the charger. $500 I call the sweetspot to initiate into RC car racing.

I wouldn't call that... cheap.

I've spent well over €700 on my RC car, without considering the transmitter, which I borrowed from my planes. It was €150.

I also fly airplanes, and so far I've spent about $500 in 4 planes, putting the transmitter into that price aswell.

Unless you race buggies.

You (and I) spend $1000 on a computer you're gonna replace in 2-3 years.

I spend $500 on a RC car that I will use for my lifetime, until its spares become so uncommon that I buy a newer one with more replacements availability.

And if given that moment, the car still functions, I will put it on a glass expositor, give it a facelift, and show everyone the devil I used to run.

it also serves to remember of the technology we used in the past... And to see how the car handled versus the ones we use now
Not sure i can agree to that. In the short time i was in it i spent well over $2000. I've spent around 3k for my rig, peripherals and all. That being said, my rig won't break every other time i run it. What killed RCs for me wasent the money. It was all the aggravation that came with them. Im sure you know what im talking about lol

That's in your case, I never spend more than 1000€ on an update (happens every 2 years).

Why does it break every time you use it? In terms of 4chan...

LERN2DRIVE UNOOB!!!

jk, but seriously, how do you manage? To date (and involving aaaaaaaall the racing I've done with the poor thingy), I've broken:

-Two front left suspension arms ($15 both),
-A suspension arm holder (from the first severe crash, made one with an aluminium square bar),
-Burnt an underrated ESC (was in warranty, so free, and got a free motor aswell as it was a bundle ),
-A differential set ($16),
-Used up two tyre sets (one was free, and the other came with the car, the new one was $25, given that I only race with new tyres, I use rally game ones to play around),
-And the most expensive one, broke an universal joint and replaced the four. They were $70 (auch) but the new ones can withstand up to four times the power I make them drive.

Total expense in two years in terms of replacements: $130 aprox.

If you compare that to my computer... I spent that just to replace the old faulty hard drives and the burnt pump LOL. And it's from last April, since when I've already swapped the soundcard, the waterblock, the case, all the fans, and the radiators. That's a huuuuge lot more than what I spent on the car lol

Have... you ever raced off-road? People crash, you case/overshoot jumps in a rush, tons of stuff. It's not like TC or small-scale -- buggies/truggies/trucks take beatings.

I got Dirt 2 for free with my Radeon 5850 and feel ripped off. So my answer is no.
