Did I kill my CPU? (re: installing heatsink) - Page 2

OK - So basically if the system boots then I am probably OK?

I was afraid of cracking the CPU, but I really wasn't sure how much to tighten the heatsink...

What one are you using?
What do the instructions say?

Oh, and don't make the same mistake as me and put the Ram in the wrong slots!
I did, and was running in single channel mode

I'm using a Thermalright TRUE 120 with the LGA 1155 bolt-through kit. Unfortunately the kit doesn't say anything about how tight to make it.

Also, thanks for the note about the RAM. I'll definitely check the manual to make sure i'm using the dual channel slots

I think most coolers bolt down until they reach stops! As in, you can't over tighten them! So if that's how you did it in your test runs. Then it does seem to be the way to go!

I mean! If the difference between tight/tight to the stops, is half a turn. Then down to the stops would be the way to go!

Having said all that! I have no experience with your cooler!

if there is any damage it would be to the mobo - bent pins(pic)?, there is very little room for it to move anyway. You should be fine.

I've been looking online at Thermalright's website and the instructions for this really doesn't say whether or not to tighten the bolts all of the way down or not.

It seemed OK in my test (I didn't hear a crack, heh!) so I guess that's how I'll do it.

@andrewmchugh: Thanks for that picture. I'll have to inspect the pins on the motherboard to see if anything is damaged.

Am I pretty much correct in thinking that if the system boots I should be fine?

I'd say that's a fair assumption

I have the same cooler, and I think the same kit. There are 2 1156 bolt thru kits.

This is the one I have

http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/sidewinderco..._2150_13493977

I just tightened the 2 big main screws till I heard a slight click.

Also, just to be extra careful I put electric tape over my metal backplate.

Looks a bit different from mine but has the same idea.

Here's the one I'm using: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/10...e_Spirit_.html

Also, the back plate doesn't get tight until you attach the heatsink. I'm not sure if that is by designed or not, but after attaching the back plate and front-side mounting posts, the back plate can move up and down (through the holes) quite a bit. However, after installing the heatsink it pulls the back plate up and makes it nice and tight.
