Did you even bother to read the article?

The problem is the accessibility software that they'd normally use to facilitate accessing email and other items (like text-to-speech) isn't compatible with Gmail's interface.

There are also things like email-to-braille machines, that take text and generate braille with a mechanical device.

Do you really think that blind people just completely lack access to email?

Yes it is annoying that people complain about new things but its a point they need to make. If schools are forcing students to use technology that they physically can not use, its not right. How would you feel if it was you, your child, or your spouse who would be separated from the rest of the class because they cant use the software they are being forced to use.

In a college this could be a big problem because you are not getting the equal education you are paying for. This could lead to tons of lawsuits if schools/google don't fix this. Until google does fix this, they need to find a workaround for schools to help those students out and accommodate them for their needs.
So I should be declined an advantage because someone else cant use it? How is it fair for me? I'm all for equal rights but everyone in life has a limitation and life isn't fair all the time. Why hold back the majority because a minority has a problem with something.

You people in this thread that are basically saying, forget about the blind people, we don't care about them, have not thought about if it was YOU that was blind.

Don't take things for granted, it could happen to YOU.
I'm sure if you went blind you wouldn't care about getting an education anymore huh...
If I was blind I would do what I do now except learn braille. (and not drive)

I still think they should be englobed in another school that teaches them specifically in braille and empowering their rest of senses in order to be less "unable" tha they already are.

That way they improgress further and better, and they don't hold back the others.
Back in the 50's the argument was made that black students do indeed hold back white peoples education. The argument was based on the fact that most black people were given no education in the first place, so trying to bring them up to speed held back the rest of the class.

All people learn differently and some learn faster than others.

Separating people due to differences IS illegal. I would be willing to bet that having a blind person in your class would in fact add to your education. You have to interact with people with disabilities in everyday life, why make school and different? Learn to deal with it and you WILL learn something.

So if there was a blind and deaf person who had lost the nerve endings in their fingers, how would this work out? Can't use sight, hearing, or touch as ways to do something. Would this law still require that schools cater to this persons extremely specific needs based on the ideal of fairness?

Yes.

EDIT: Although there may be certain modifications to the education plan for specialized instruction assistance.

When you guys have kids and your kids have a disability, you will be the first ones screaming that your child receives the same level of education that other children get.

Yea... I wouldn't want to be the douche parent that is responsible for holding everyone else's kids back.

Equal education, sure... but the burden should be on the minority, not the majority. If you have a blind/deaf kid then it should be your responsibility to work with the teacher make sure he/she gets the proper education.

If a kid is paralyzed from the waist down does that mean that nobody in his gym class should be allowed to play soccer because he can't participate?

I don't see why they can't just create a separate lesson plan that doesn't use google apps.

I think the thing that is frustrating with this specific situation is that there are easy work-arounds to HAVING to use the google interface, which is what the main problem is. You can easily use free programs as email and calendar clients, and google is nice and freely/openly supports POP and IMAP service with gmail/calendar. I'm all for equal opportunity, but making THIS big of a deal about it, when there are easy and free workarounds is lame. Just because a school uses gmail as their email server, doesn't mean that you MUST use the gmail interface.

I said that a long time ago after we started having rules against certain things being allowed in elementary (like peanut butter because of ONE kid). Be much better to ship all the defects out I say.

Just encouraging weakness and soon enough it will come back to bite us all in the ass.
