Looking for a new laptop

Dell XPS 17" off the american site
Market Value: $2,424.99
Total Savings: $205.00
Dell Price: $2,219.99
Code:
Processor: 2nd generation Intel® CoreTM i7-2820QM processor 2.30 GHz w ith Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.40 GHz
OS: Genuine Window s® 7 Ultimate, 64-Bit, English (Am going to install Arch linux as main OS and dual boot windows..)
LCD: 17.3" FHD (1080p) w ith 2.0MP HD Webcam & Facial Recognition (can save $20 by removing facial recognition)
RAM: 8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory
Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics with 555MUS Optimus
Battery: 92 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Hard Drive: 1.28TB (2 x 640GB 7200 RPM HDD)
Drive Tray: Tray Load Blu-ray® Triple Writer (reads and writes CDs, DVDs, BDs)
Wifi+Bluetooth: Intel© Centrino© Advanced-N 6230 and Bluetooth IN6230 3.0
Keyboard: Backlit Keyboard - English
Sound: JBL 2.1 Speakers w ith Waves Maxx Audio 3 + Creative SoundBlaster X-FI MB 1.2
My budget is about $2500 USD preferably, but is open to change if I like what I see.
I'm going to dual boot, Arch linux as main OS, then depending on what hdd/s I get I'll set up approximately 300gb for Windows for gaming.
The above specs are the basics I'm looking at, but I hear the graphics card isn't that great. How ever one thing I do want is a back lit keyboard.
I've looked at the HP laptops but don't like them as much, I currently own a dell studio XPS but it's quite a bit old and no longer works for what I wish to do with it.
I hope I can get some other excellent choices from here, also in case you're wondering I don't mind if the awesome laptop I should buy will be coming out at the end of the year, It just means my budget to buy a laptop will be slightly higher, how ever if I can reduce the cost for the same basic specs and take out **** I don't need that would also be awesome.

I do plan on gaming on the windows partition, some fps games eg TF2, COD black ops possibly, CSS, nothing *too* heavy. Definitely video watching and what not, irc and web browsing, some image editing.. basic things..
Hope you all can help me out, thanks.

Um... no wonder that's expensive dang... It's a Dell so might as well say Alienware lol.
Um anyways
You could try a reseller like
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8170-clevo-p170hm-p-2971.html?wconfigure=yes

This would probably go over.
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7280-custom-laptop-built-clevo-x7200-p-2881.html?wconfigure=yes

http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_customed&model_name=NP8170-S1

Of course if you wanted to compromise you could get an ASUS G73SW. I'm typing this up with mine now. Of course the graphics aren't as powerful but...

No problem here's what I'd get if I were customizing I guess...

You could customize the ASUS if you bought it through XOTIC pc but I got mine from Best Buy because I need the warranty with my luck.
But hey if you don't have a problem with Dell then don't let me talk you out of it.

Ahk I'll also look at the 15-16 inch ones as my current one is 15 inch and good size, just wouldnt mind the extra screen room etc.. then decide after comparing a 15inch and 17.3inch

In term of the laptops what are the brands etc I should be looking at?

Forget the Asus get one of the Sager's. They are so nice. For $2500 you should be able to get a 485M and one of the best Sandy Bridge mobile CPU's along with 12 Gb of memory and 2 750Gb HDD's in RAID1/0 if you get the 17".

Ya just built that model for $2500. That's nicer than a lot of people's desktops on this site.

OP if you like open source why not give system76 a look? They ship with Ubuntu but I think they try to choose parts that will work without issue on any distro. Plus they're cheaper Clevo builds most of the time than even Sager.

Negative I tried to replicate the computer I built at Xotic PC and it wasn't even close. The one at 76 was only 15", only 1 HDD, only 1 year warranty. Same CPU and GPU but all for the same cost.

He can put whatever OS he wants on it, it won't work any better or any worse on the hardware they choose it's the same, lol.

@Segovax, I don't really wish to raid, as I was going to dual boot, one hard drive per OS, but partition what ever one windows is going to be installed on so I have a storage area that is separate from windows but can be access by windows/linux.
Also what are your suggestions on the 15"? Still Sager?

@Rookie1337 I dislike ubuntu (yes I have tried it, both the 8,9 and 10 installs and had issues or bad experiences (had an issue with grub once, asked on irc how to fix, I was 13 at the time, they told me sudo rm -rf /* so I did xD) with them all from the start yet Arch linux works straight away on my current laptop. But thanks for the site, definitely taking a look.
