[RE]Scientists find New Delhi residents constantly exposed to drug-resistant bacteria - Page 5

"Hundreds of Indian workers employed to manually clean non-flush toilets have protested in Delhi against their working conditions."

"Government figures suggest that about 300,000 low-caste Dalits are still employed in such work."

"Manual "scavenging" - removing human excreta from dry or non-flush toilets - is a centuries-old practice in India.
It is mainly carried out by the Dalits, formerly known as the untouchables, who are at the lowest rung of the Hindu caste system.
They go from house to house every morning to collect night soil, a euphemism for human faeces."

Strange all the comments on the first page...
Doesn't this just mean, we can reverse engineer new medicines from these bugs and bacteria, and create stronger drugs?

The best approach is targeting other critical things in the bacteria. There are drugs that try to inhibit the beta-lactamases. If you inhibit the beta-lactamase then the beta-lactam drug can do its work.

Fun fact: The suffix "ase" in biology usually means that the enzyme works on such a molecule. So a beta-lactamase works on a beta-lactam and disables it. These bacteria are still vulnerable to the beta-lactam drug, they simply produce an enzyme that destroys the drug. If we can disable their beta-lactamase with a 2nd drug then the beta-lactam drug should still kill them.

"It offers cheap, world-class medical care to Western tourists at private hospitals, yet has some of the worst child mortality and maternal death rates outside sub-Saharan Africa."

"There were more than 670 million cell phone connections in India by the end of August, a number that has been growing by close to 20 million a month, according to government figures.
Yet U.N. figures show that only 366 million Indians have access to a private toilet or latrine, leaving 665 million to defecate in the open."

"In Annabhau Sathe Nagar, a raised latrine of corrugated tin empties into a river of sewage that children splash in and adults wade across. The slum in east Mumbai has about 50,000 residents and a single toilet building, with 10 pay toilets for men and eight for women – two of which are broken."

"A large blue barrel outside a home is filled with murky brown water, tiny white worms and an aluminum drinking cup. "

-If people just keep ignoring their own health so they can have 2 cellphones they are obviously going to die out in a tornado of disease. If they are that dumb...
Like I said, filthy conditions can breed lots of bacteria, but it in itself can't breed resistant strains.

Maybe because the bacteria is eating their brains from the inside out.

Cellphones / Spaceprograms / PooPdrink water = blow up the moon?

Nuke the place. Only way to be sure... that this stuff don't spread. And yes, I am serious.

I figure a single 10MT warhead, or maybe half a dozen 1-2MT warheads in a star pattern above the metro area? No?

In theory you could probably clean the area with 1 low yield explosion and just let the methane gas that bubbles up from their pooplakes and pooprivers burn the place clean.

It is totally true that they use methane from their own feces to power burners to "cook" their food and to produce electricity to charge their cell phones. They are amazing like that.
Watch the video and be awestruck by their engineering prowess.

Wonder what they use for rocket fuel?!! OMG
