At a wall as to whats causing crashes.

Thread Starter
Short n' sweet, been having random OS crashes that occur after a reboot sometimes. The pattern is after I'm in windows and open a prog, sometimes I'll get one of two scenarios.

1. EXPLORER.EXE crash, need to look at the module it claimed caused it in event viewer (always changes)

2. Total crash, where nothing will respond, can open task manager but can't close, services and everything in that tabs is empty. Still able to move mouse no BSOD.

Things I've tried is repairing windows (don't want to reinstall unless it's 100% needed), check my drives for errors (no clue how to do that for an SSD, which could be the problem), and memtested for at lest 24hrs on std, 5, and test 8 and no errors,

Been still testing for the possibility my oc magically became unstable but it's been in prime95 for 10hrs so far and I had it at these clocks for about a year 24/7 so still thinking it's not OC related, but not 100%.

Checked for viruses too btw, nada and it's been god knows how long since I installed something, It initially started when I had problems trying to install SP1 and it kept giving me an install error so needed to repair windows and that magically did the trick. Note it's been crashing even before I tried to install SP1. It's unpredictable and most of the time if it's been running for weeks it'll keep going until a reboot THEN act dumb again. After another boot 90% of the time it'll run like nothing happened.

No clue as to where to go next and this is driving me up a wall. Anyone got idea's?

(Going to finish 24hr prime and see if it fails)

Did you try restoring your OS to a working date? And if that doesnt help.. the only thing i can think of is your windows or hard drive is messing up.

If its occurring after you boot up and get to the desktop, have you checked what is running at startup?

I'd recommend running a check disk (chkdsk) if possible.

And also, even though you dont think it is a virus, it could be. A good bit of viruses are binded into explorer.exe so another process doesn't show inside of Task Manager that would look out of place.

No, only because sometimes it'll do it and sometimes it wouldn't, but I'll give that a shot too.

I repaired it is all I did, thinking one of the drives is messed up too but ran the extended WD diagnostic tool on all 3 drives and it found nothing.

Yeah, I always keep those in check, ocd about that and nothing's really been changed for a while, nothing I can trace back to a possible conflict somewhere or something, it's weird and frustrating.

You can run chkdsk on an ssd? I fear the drive to because my last one failed with similar issues, os freezing up just like this one. I HOPE it's not though... may try shadowing the os on a regular hdd and see if it still does it. Good idea?

I forgot to add that dying CPUs can cause freezes and stuff like this. Lets hope that this isnt the problem! I think you should just reinstall windows though. Make a partition and put all your stuff that you dont want deleted in that partition and keep a partition for windows.. just reinstall and hope it works!

Can't hurt. It'll allow you to see if it is SSD or OS related. Which will rule out one or the other, and mean it will either be costly to do a SSD replacement or a bit of a hassle to reinstall Windows.

Good luck and God Speed.

Hmm! Well, nascasho is overclocking from the looks of it so this may be a factor.
