Remove Plastic= 2c Drop

Hi All
4 days back I got a new fan for my V8 (I know, but its always served me well..), so when I replaced it I thought it looked better without the plastic cover over it.....and my cpu temp dropped by 2C, thinking nothing of it, I thought I would see what occurs over the next few days.

Now Im into the 4th day and all is still a drop of 2C, so I put the cover back on last night and just checked again and .....what do you know an increase of 1 to 2C....so off it came and down it dropped again.

No way can a bit of plastic effect the CPU temp like that or could it?..
Just wanted to know what you guys think.I have AIDA64 for temp monitoring.

The plastic was holding in the heat from the fins instead of letting it dissipate into the case.

Did your vid card temps rise at all? I would assume that removing that gimicky cover would help....Looks like your cooler was getting "heat soaked" with it on...I want to see a V-8 Cooler with a 100+CFM fan..the way they stacked the Towers looks like it might benifit from a high flow fan.

Thermal conductivity (*k*) of plastic is low (0.17 to 0.51 Watts/meter/Celsius) - they can be used as insulators for that reason. The restricted airflow can also affect the effective convective heat transfer coefficient (*h*). Usually the point of shroud is to increase *h* when inside a heat exchanger through the directed increase of average velocity of the air (with which *h* scales)

I love me some engineering in the mornings. :-)

Temps on the GPU stayed the same.....looking behind the shroud, some nice nasty foam pads...hmmmm

But you changed the fan. Is it a different model? What about ambient temps?

System moniter is AIDA64, the v8 is a bugger to take off the mobo, so I decided to take the cover off while on the mobo, so I left it with the old fan in place, when I booted up to get some emails thats when I noticed the temp drop.

So the new fan was placed after the temp drop discovery....plus when I placed the shroud over the new fan the temp still went up.
