I don't know how galaxy warranty, so don't know if its ok to open the card or not.
I believe opening the card voids the warranty. I cant believe it happened right after I sent the stupid UPC!

Galaxy tech said yesterday that it takes 2 days to process the RMA after they get my application for RMA through email. Then I am authorized to send the card back, which I have to pay for. Then it takes them 7 days to turn around and send me the new card (which they state they thuroughly test? i.e., it won't be an unopened retail box...i'm fighting them on this one). Then I get the "new" card from UPS ground like 5 business days later. So its at least 2 weeks without any video card. Great.

Can you do me a favor and link a picture of the back of a PCB and circle where I'm supposed to be looking for little burn marks? Also, it it just overheated enough to lock up the system, it might be internal GPU damage right? Nothing to do with the VRMs. There was no noise, no smell, no automatically restarted computer, and no fire. Just a solid red screen that required a forced power off to eliminate.

Gues I need to hit craigslist and buy the cheapest video card I can find to hold me over the 2 weeks. I need computer for work too and can't be without one.

just look on the back of the card for any signs of burning, might be hard to notice but it's worth looking, don't open it up if your worried about warranty

Ok check it out. There's typically no way at all a company can tell if you've removed the stock cooler as long as you put it back on correctly. I have never heard of the back of the PCB being damaged in one of these incidences, but here is a picture of the PCB front where the damage would have probably occured. I couldnt find a good picture of the back, but just look at the back of the card where I circled it. Again, probably nothing will be visible from the back.
