2500k build - HW Test help

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
I'm looking for general direction for tests I should run and what I should look for in the test results to know how stable my new build is. This is my first personal build after about three years of waiting for the right system (price, performance, upgradability, shelf-life etc..) Here are the specs:

i5-2500K_Stock Intel cooler;
BIOSTAR TH67+ LGA 1155 Intel H67;
G.SKILL Ripjaws X 16GB DDR3 1600_9-9-9-24 (1.5v);
XFX HD-687A-ZNBC Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition;
WD BLUE 500GB 6Gb|WD GREEN 2TB (64MB) 3Gb;
Thermaltake Black Widow W0319RU 850W;
Thermaltake Armor Series VA8003BWS Full Tower Case.

I encountered some issues with the XFX driver causing BSOD while running the Win7 system index, but I upgraded to the newest version and it stopped.

Any and all input regarding would be appreciated.

I hope to have a better understanding of the overall "health" of the system before I really start adding applications to it, possibly creating an image file to revert back to in case of future error.

Holy Batman, 16GB of RAM...***whydude

There are tons of applications to test if you're PC is stable, such as Prime95.

Also, is anything overclocked?

welcome to OCN. You're running on a H67 board which means your multiplier will be locked. Prime95 running blend will be the app that will test for stability on Sandy Bridge chips. Tho overall you have a decent build having a 2500k and a H67 board is self defeating, you should have either picked up a P67 board or got a 2500.

16GB came at a great price and I plan on running multiple games, having an IDE/video/photo editors open, and/or watching videos simultanously so I thought why not?
At the moment I have not overclocked anything (H67 board) but I am not against it in the future.

H67 served my purpose for now as it was cheaper and I didnt plan on overclocking right away. Honestly I went with the 2500k for the better graphics and I could overclock in the future (Z6 series). I was interested in Lucid's Virtu to use both the intergrated and discrete graphics, if my motherboard is able to run it.

What should I look for with prime95?

P95 will bsod or have workers fail if you have a failed OC. It runs your CPU at 100% as a torture test. I agree the Z68 series should be a nice board. If your running everything at stock you should have no problems anyway.
