ICH10 Raid5 vs Perc6/i vs NAS - Page 2

I'd highly suggest getting a raid controller. As duckyho said, you can move that array to another machine with very little effort.

Also, you don't want a raid array tied to a specific chipset as it's alot easier to find a replacement raid controller then it is a replacement motherboard as it gets older.

One more thing is you would be freeing up some processor power by running the raid off of a dedicated card as well.

My suggestion is getting a good raid controller within your price range.

I've been looking at Adaptec 6405, but then again, it's been 10 years since I used Adaptec SCSI cards, so I'm not sure if Adaptec in it's current form, is worth buying. I saw some articles on PERC and other cards.

Do these SATA III 6Gbps cards offer hot-swapping, drive re-building, and how does it let me know when I'm in Win 7 x64 that the array has a drive failure? Sorry for the questions!!

As for the sata 3 raid controllers, I haven't looked in to them lately.

As for knowing when/if you have a failed drive will depend on your raid controller and if it has any software with it.

As for my raid controller, it is a Highpoint RocketRAID 2300. And the only way I know if anything has failed, is that I have my OS raid array running (raid 0) and if there is any issues my system will crash.

Other then that I don't have any software running on my machine to let me know otherwise.

Apparently my controller does have monitoring software, I've just never installed it. Downloading/installing now
