Well first off it's rather simple to hook it up without using a receiver. There are two ways.
First one. You would just need two RCA Y splitters then one 2x RCA male to single RCA female cable. Something like this.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Then just a regular RCA cable (or subwoofer cable) connected to that cable. Then into the sub in for the subwoofer.

Diagram below. Dashed lines lead to your speakers.
Code:
    /---
L --\\_____
    /--- \\____to sub
R --\\_____/
Second one would be getting some RCA cables. Stripping them and putting them into the low level (red and black plugs) input of the subwoofer. Following that the same thing for the output to the designated plug, but seeing as they use 1/4" or an XLR input you would need to make the output cable.

Besides that you would be looking for a preamp or a receiver with low level outputs or preamp outs. Since driving power to the speakers would damage them.

^This. Those speakers do not require a receiver at all. If you need a receiver that can hook up active speakers, stay away from entry level Onkyos since they do not have preouts. I believe a few entry level Yamaha's do.

I would follow askthems directions to set up your 2.1.
