New i7 2600k working my GTX 295 too hard? - Page 2

What's the CPU temps? I'm wondering if it's just the whole room that's the issue, not the GPU...

CPU Temps are pretty good actually.the H-50 keeps it at 27-30 on idle generally. but right now its sitting at 36-40 on idle but its sweltering in here. I've had the sun on this room all day. it's mankini time :|

Load is 60-70. havent run IBT yet >.<

The 295 is near as makes no difference just as powerful as the 480/570.
might be that your previous CPU didnt really had enough power to completely n-joy that monster...

* try to clean it
* add extra fan if possible

Personally I would recommend selling, I used to have EVGA 295 it runs hot and makes a lot of noise. Recently I purchased EVGA 470 and couldn't be more happy. It's $250 runs almost silent and under load it's about 60 C

doesn't your 8800GTX as physx bottleneck your pc?

i am tempted to sell it, but i'd get very little for it these days. i wouldn't recoup enough to get a card that performs at the same level without considerable investment. I was planning on running this one into the ground, or at least until Kepler or ATI's next offering is on the table.

I'm going to add some mini fans to the grate above the gpu. it gets very hot in that area so that should help with the airflow a bit.

This forums pretty darn good! i've been a "stalker" for many years but never joined up! i should have done it sooner.

the 8 series (on the q9550 platform at least) gave me such a boost in physx applications. Mafia 2 was flawless maxed out completely, cryostasis with physx patch was pretty much perfect too. removing the card resulted in a significant drop, enough at least to warrant the extra pennies on the electricity bill to keep it in.

I've yet to try any physx tests with the i7. but i would imagine the premise remains true, having two cards to render while a 3rd to run physx independently should in theory result in better performance. the 8800GTX doesn't even bat an eye lid in regards to load. it generally sits at around 60%. However i'm sure thats probably down to Nvidias sub par physx drivers as on occasions you still get physx related slow downs without the GPU working it's socks off.

Hope that answers your question

Just out of curiosity, did you have your previous Q9550 overclocked ? If yes, by how much ?

As to the GPU temperatures, you might want to take out the heatsink and clean the thermal paste. Vendors don't usually employ the highest quality paste on the market. You can notice quite a difference if you use a good thermal paste, like Arctic Cooling MX-2.

Oh, and if you haven't already, remove the slot cover below the card. It helps the card push fresh air from outside the case and lower the temperatures

As to squealing, it's probably capacitor squeal, and it happens often if a card is pushed to it's max... or the card is pushed with overclocking. It depends on the specific card you have, but I'd say in general it does not mean the card will fail, it's just that some cards do that when pushed.

Your CPU cannot push your GPU over its limits.
It will push it to max potential though...nothing wrong with that.

My q9550 was clocked to 3.6 in the summer and 3.8 in the winter. my x48 board was quite limited.

Obviously i've got some cooling issues that i need to sort out. Starting with giving it a good spring clean and some Arctic silver.
