Two Questions regarding RAID Controllers

Thread Starter
1) Which is better SATA III on the motherboard or SATA III on a RAID controller card (assuming neither is in RAID)? I currently have this.

2) When using SATA III on a motherboard, you need SATA III cables. Does this also apply to RAID controllers? I want to use this cable (I want a black one) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-064-_-Product Would this cable still have SATA III functionality?

Thanks!

There will be no discenrable difference for single drives. There isn't even a discernable difference if your running a non parity raid (1, 0, or 10). You only really need a raid controller if you want to run raid 5 or 6.

It doesn't specify SATA III so I wouldn't bet on it supporting it. SATA III is a selling point for manufacturers so there's no reason for them to omit such information from a product description.

Go to newegg, type "black SATA 6" into search bar. Take your pick.

SATA 6 and SFF-8087 are not the same.

Any decent cable will work - the SATA 6Gb/s spec does not specify anything extra for cables over the prior revisions. All it states is that some marginal quality cables may not work. Providing your SATA cables of choice are not made of bell wire and put together by an idiot in a shed you will be fine.

I have that exact card and have been playing with it for 2 weeks but I purchased the card with the cable included.

It definately made an improvement over the Intel SATA3Gb/s on my ICH10 controller using a single 256GB Crucial C300 but I can't get any decent RAID0 performance and have gone back to the ICH10 untill I can figure out this RAID stuff on the card.

I'll look around for the breakout cable you need and I know I've seen them for 15-20 dollars.

You wanna look for black, go for it but you need a SFF-8087 (Reverse breakout) Cable.

The one that came with my card was black.

hmmmmmmmmmmm...........................

this discussion again........

that controler car will not give you any performance gain at all.

if you want a gain in performance then get a corprate one (meaning ... ones that are used in lage clusters etc... and have its own mem cpu etc...). if you get the cheap one that only can add hdd's then you are using the main cpu and ram from your rig and then that defeats the perpouse of what you wanted........

i hope this is makeing sence to you so far.....

you would be better off useing the onboard controler as it will take less cpu power to convert and read etc....

and controler cards perform better in raid arays

now the cables.... the diffrence between a std sata3 and a sata6 performance is not noticable to the eye it is not worth all the money.

the only diffrence is like cat5 and cat8... the one has only plastic coted wires and the other has plastic and foil... so the signal will not distorte the other wires etc......

tbhh.... not worth all the money if it is for home use only unless it is for huge corprate with loads of users on the network etc...............
