CPU usage question

Ok so lets see if i can convay this question. For some reason this seems hard.

At what cpu usage does your cpu start to bottleneck? lets say my cpu is loaded to 70% and i load up another program that takes it to 95%usage.
will i see a system slowdown when i play a game?

It seems to me that the cpu is still running at the same speed but the usage would slow it down as there are only so many ways the data can travel.

Guess what im lookign for is what usage does it just chew through data with no care and about what usage does it start to really work?

Thanks

So...the question is, at what usage is the CPU being used?

Lets try it this way
my cpu running a game(wow) is usualy around 40% usage and my frame rate is 60fps.(all settings ultra)
During some parts of a dungeon raid it will jump to 84% usage and my frame rate drops to the high 40s. Thats not much of a performance hit yet for my aging cpu, but how bad will it be if say my cpu usage jumps to say 95%.

Ah. Well, then you're approaching your limit, given the assumption that your fps are dropping due to the CPU bottleneck. I would think your 460 would handle wow just fine, but I'm no MMORPG guy, so maybe someone else could advise on that.

I'm interpreting the question this way: assuming some sort of a curve-fit to the link between CPU usage and dropped fps, what is the projected fps drop at 95(or100)% usage?

The answer to that is: I have no idea. There are a ton of factors to consider there, from how your operating system throttles computations at high-intensity regimes to bandwith issues and networking quirks. (perhaps even memory bottlenecks, now that I notice you're running 32-bit)

I would venture to say your CPU/memory would likely limit your system before your 460, so at this stage, you can pretty much keep on playing until you run into lags in fps that hinder you from actually continuing the game. At that point you can fork out the dough to upgrage.

You'll probably be approaching the 30's or lower at full-burn, interpolating (dirtily) from the numbers you gave.

But, just my.

Hope this helps.
