Dual booting win7 and ubuntu 10.10

Thread Starter
I've run into some trouble dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 on separate drives. Windows 7 is on an intel ssd and ubuntu on a hdd. The problem I'm having is that there is no option to choose which OS that I want to load. Can someone please help me with this. I appreciate your help. Thank You.

You should be able to hit a key on boot and load up a boot menu to select a drive, boot into Ubuntu and you should be able to configure GRUB and add your second drive to the boot list and then make the Ubuntu drive the boot drive in the bios. You could also install grub to the MBR from windows or linux and then add the configuration from there. BCDEdit also works from Windows if you want to use the Windows built in boot manager, Ubuntu will just show up as "Other OS"

You need to fill out your system specs and then it will be easier to help you out. http://www.overclock.net/specs.php What motherboard do you own? You will just need to enter the boot device menu upon restart and then choose whichever hard drive/operating system it is that you want to boot into.

You need to make sure that you modify the MBR on the SSD, which I assume is the drive you have set in the BIOS to run first. This is where the bootloader for Linux needs to be installed. The bootloader is the menu you want every time you restart that would ask you which OS you want to boot to. You can still have the OS on the HDD, but if the bootloader is on the HDD too then the system is never going to see it when it's booting up.

So I added some of my specs hope it helps. Please let me know if you need more information or if there's a mistake. I tried what you guys told me to do and I didn't really understand what to do. Plex, can you tell me where I can modify the MBR on the SSD?

The easiest way for you to do this would be to have W7 installed first. When you install Ubuntu, there should be some advanced options that would allow you to install the bootloader (I believe Ubuntu uses GRUB by default?) on the SSD.

So I tried reinstalling ubuntu from a live cd and got to the option where I can choose where to install the bootloader. The problem now is that the only place I can install the bootloader is on my HDD. It doesn't give me the option to install the bootloader onto the SSD.

It does not matter which drive you install the boot loader to, once it is installed, just setup your computer to boot to that drive, when you pick the OS, it will then load from the drive that the OS is on.
