Single channel makes a big difference, actually.

My buddy was suffering a major bottleneck in his system, and his RAM was in single channel mode. He went and bought 2 sticks of some Corsair XMS RAM, was able to get it to run in dual channel mode and it doubled his FPS.

HWmonitor does not label which one is NB, what temp is considered overheating?

@Killam0n

It's DX11. ram timings are above, not sure if it's tweaked.

Thanks for the great suggestions guys!!!
Those timings are pretty loose for the RAM speed that you're running (1340Mhz). Start a thread on the AMD memory subforum for some help tuning those timings.

My PC loved Dragon Age Origins on my 4890 before my 6970, so i dont know what your talking about lol. Yeah 3.8 will rid you of the slow downs most likely.

"run in dual channel mode and it doubled his FPS"

I call bull****.

Not even integrated graphics would double your fps from ANY type of ram configuration. I dont care if he went from SDram 133mhz to triple channel 2000mhz. that is a terrible lie.

I figured it should automatically run at the full speed the moment I put it in, shouldnt it?

Unganged = single channel mode. That right there, would make a difference.
You want unganged on a multi core system. It's still dual channel, it's just a different operating mode. Look it up.

Even still Single channel vs Dual channel wouldn't make a game unplayable on a decent system. A few frames MAYBE depending on the game.

The 5850 is limiting Dragon Age 2 performance if you are running DX11 with high settings. Maybe try screwing around with the tessellation setting in CCC(if that option is available to 5xxx) with the newer drivers.

Since you're running your memory below spec you could try running it with lower timings. 8-8-8-20-1t should work, I have the same set. I think I actually had them running 7-7-7-18-1t at a similar clock you have. It doesn't make much difference outside of memory benchmarks though.

I can't believe it. The 5850 was a monster and now it's being conquered.
What is the advantage to running memory at higher speeds?

Thank you!

The faster memory speed usually correct any choppy graphics due to lack of bandwidth.

However, your main issue is dx11 on high detail settings.

I can run high on dx11 on my i7 920 6gb 1600mhz ram and gtx 560ti, and its still kinda choppy...

Set the game to dx9 and 8x AA. Bet it runs smooth as silk.

I tried dx11 on medium and high, I didnt see much detail improvement compared to the much lower fps. It is a true resource hoggggg
