Crysis 2 - What did you think of the story?

Thread Starter
So I finally just finished Crysis 2 on PC, and personally I liked the story of the first Crysis MUCH better. However, I do prefer the gameplay and control scheme of Crysis 2. In that area, Crysis 2 is a definite upgrade.

I just feel the story was kind of choppy and a little difficult to follow. It also seemed to be a bit "out there." Yet another "virus sweeps the city" story, albeit with a kind of cool alien twist to it. I feel they could have done a better job explaining what the hell was going on. The first Crysis story had more mystery to it, was easier to follow, and had a much smoother flow to it, IMO. When I was given a mission in the first Crysis, I knew what was going on, why I was given the mission, and what I needed to get done. In Crysis 2, I often felt myself going "Wait...what the hell am I doing again?" when starting a mission. I hated how a mission would "end," you'd go to a CoD-esque military monitor type screen, and then you'd be at a completely different spot about to do who knows what. What really got me was when I got to the end of the game, they introduced a new, harder to kill alien, and then the game ends with a couple clicks of the mouse. I literally sat there watching the final cutscene going "Is that really it?"

And why did they not continue the first Crysis story? That bugs me more than anything. The plot in Crysis 2 has very little to do with the first game AT ALL, other than a Nanosuit and Prophet's bizarre appearance in the game. The aliens aren't even the same! It just doesn't make any sense to me. I really enjoyed the first Crysis game and was looking forward to the sequel to THAT plot...not a completely different plot altogether!

The gameplay I felt was fantastic, and the Nanosuit upgrades were a nice touch. It was a little more linear than I would have liked, but you still have multiple ways to attack a particular mission so to me that's forgivable. However the choppy plot sort of killed it for me. I've replayed Crysis many times, but I doubt I'll replay Crysis 2 single player.

What are your thoughts/opinions?

*** NOTE - Please don't turn this into a Crysis 2 bandwagon bashing thread because you are butthurt over no DX11 or because you got a game rather than another benchmark. Please keep the discussion on topic, which is the plot/story! Thanks! ***

Also looking to hear some opinions. After much neglect.. I finally finished the first tonight.
Gotta say, it was one of my favorite fps campaigns. Would you say 2 is worth a pick up at least?

I wish there was more of a lead in to the story. Last game, we were fighting aliens on a remote island in the southeastern Pacific... Suddenly New York is a smoking crater?

Totally. Just as much fun as the original.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't pay $60 for it, but I did have fun playing the game. I just didn't like the story very much, which kind of killed the whole experience for me.

I agree with you, it was a little weird. I felt like I would just be going toward the direction of the objective, instead of actualy knowing what I was supposed to do. I also think that it was weird when Prophet commited sucide a then gave the suit to a noob. Why would he kill himself? I also didn't like how it wasn't as "open" as crysis 1. In crysis 1, there where multiple ways to sneak through the jungle and get to the objective, but it crysis 2, there only one way you can get to the objective, if you know what I mean.

The worst part is, everyone at my school is like "Dude, you have to get crysis 2, it has amazing graphics, and great gameplay! They give you this thing called a nanosuit, and you can go invisible!" They've never played the original though, which in my opinion, was the best one.

IMO the story was a cheap hack and slash job, it doesn't flow very well or even make any sense at times.

I played for about 40 minutes then stopped. Idk if i should try to finish the story now..

It was fun but i still prefer crysis 1 and it felt like there were alot of holes in the story, it didnt seem to link with the first one much.

IMO, the first one had a better story, but no. 2 has a better control system. The nanosuit upgrade are nice touch.

One thing I found that I didn't like is that some of the AI chatter had the same voice as Prophet. sometime I thought.. "Hang on, that's Prophet... he's switched sides..."

I thought the AI wasn't clever... You kill someone, the rest of the solders go on alert..... then 30secs later, they say "all clear"... even though they have found the body..... Also I was able to do several of the missions without firing a single shot or killing anything. I found the AI in original FarCry a lot better.
