Thread Starter
why new cards need power from the PSU? to just power the fan or it does power gpu vram too ??

the question is because i tried to use external ghx card on my laptop using PE4H and express card and my pc detects it but in gpu-z says 0mb of memory
the card i use is 5450 which doenst have port to connect PSU in it.

well yes and no, it still draws it's power from the lane for the fans e.c.t but for newer more powerful gpus, they need the extra power just to help take the strain of the mobo's

I don`t know about laptops...but on a modern AMD/intel MB, the PCI-e slot can power up to 75W, and with the main chip and VRAM using way more than that on most big GPUs, they just get the rest directly from the PSU

I don`t know the power used by a fan, but its next to nothing compared with the chips

the 6pin 12V connector offers another 75W each, and something comparable on the 8pin connectors
