[Wired] How Smartphones Can Improve Public Transit

Smartphone apps may be the key to getting people out of their cars and onto mass transit.

An interesting study of commuters in Boston and San Francisco found people are more willing to ride the bus or train when they have tools to manage their commutes effectively. The study asked 18 people to surrender their cars for one week. The participants found that any autonomy lost by handing over their keys could be regained through apps providing real-time information about transit schedules, delays and shops and services along the routes.
Makes sense.... give riders more information about scheduling, encourage community, and allow people to communicate while travelling.

This is great. As someone who lives in the NYC metro area, I can appreciate that better information about transit schedules will help commuting a lot. I may dread going in and out of Manhattan less as a result of this lol.

Missing a bus in Queens or waiting for the G at 1AM .... sucks!

I actually don't see how anyone can drive in massive metro areas at all...I'm usually hanging in DC at least once or twice a week, we're always walking or taking the metro or the bus...the amt of traffic and headache that comes with driving just isn't worth it, much nicer to just sit back and be driven around basically, so any apps that could provide this sort of information would def be an added bonus...

Mass transit in SFL sucks. It wouldn't work.

It would be neat to advance technology a bit in that sector though. For example have a transmitter at every bus stop. Someone with a transit app can check in and the bus drivers will see that they have people waiting at a nearby stop.

I'll use the NOLA tram system when they A.) install a few lines out here in Algiers, and B.) extricate the smelly homeless people.

I do use the ferry quite a bit, rather than sit in traffic on the bridge.

Buses run routes on a more/less schedule. I don't think they are advocating for a on-demand system.

Many buses have GPS them already. What this would do is allow riders to see where the bus is and ETA so they can plan accordingly.

Being able to have real-time tracking of buses, subways, and trains would great.

In NYC, they have started putting displays in the subways at least that show the eta of the next couple of trains. Granted it isn't in every station as of yet but if there is a sister bus route that travels along the same line and the train appears to be delayed I can make an informed choice to take the bus instead or wait. Giving commuters info like this on their smartphones would allow them to make those informed choices and alleviate the stress of taking mass transit and not knowing if they will get to where they need to go on time or not. I'm all for it.
