6950 Twin Frozr II vs Twin Frozr III

Hello gents,

I have a slightly annoying situation ahead of me, hope you guys can shoot some advice. I just built a rig from Newegg parts, 2500K, Antec 300, 8GB Ram, 750 watt PSU, etc etc....and the GPU I ordered is the MSI 6950 2GB Twin Frozr III. As my luck would have it, the card has issues to put it lightly- drivers constantly crashing (yes I tried fixing those, using old ones, etc etc), had some help from a tech friend, he recommended just RMAing it back to Newegg. Now here is the situation, I could simply send it back for a replacement from NewEgg.....but Frys electronics megastore is like 20 minutes away, and they carry the 6950 Twin Frozr II! But not the III smile.gif . Needless to say, I am impatient as hell to try this system out, and as a result tempted to drive down, buy the Twin Frozer II, and just send the III back at my leisure for a money refund.

The price difference is ten dollars, which doesn't matter to me.....so I ask, is there an appreciable performance difference? I have looked around for benchmarks, but honestly they say some conflicting things about the performance of both cards. I am playing on a 1920x1080 monitor, would obviously like to get the most performance at that resolution for any game.....oh and I do not plan to be doing any OCing.

Thanks a lot for any tips,

yes I know it is a somewhat banal question smile.gif

If your in a rush just drive and get the II version. Temp wise you may see a few degrees difference Celsius wise... They will both approach similar clock speeds.

Driver wise, can you explain the crashing?

Thanks for the fast reply man. Yeah, the AMd driver has been failing repeatedly, when small things like Firefox open up. Eventually it completely freezes...I had my tech friends send me some programs to test the card, and it consistently froze up when running any sort of graphical test, and hence I was recommended to not risk it, and RMA it back to Newegg.

As I understand, the biggest diff between the two Twin Frozrs is the 810 vs 850 clock speed....assuming I just made that difference up in Afterburner would I really see any gaming performance change? The cooler won't be an appreciable difference from what I gather.

Thanks for the help! Really appreciate it, past couple of days have been really frustrating.

Oh and umm, I should add one thing. Frys has a gtx 570 deal for 304 dollars...lol to make my indecision worse. Should I consider it? The heat/sound is a but of concern to me...

Twin Frozr II shaders won't unlock, Twin Frozr III shaders will unlock..making Twin Frozr III the clear winner.

I would go the extra mile to make sure you get the III.

The shader unlock is not overclocking, it is just unlocking the full potential of the PCB, so you will most likely want to do that.

What tests did you use? And it crashed when you opened up FireFox..? Do you have any old backup graphics card's to verify that it wasn't your card and possibly something else hardware related?

Was not aware of that. Dope.

Unlocked TF3 6950 > Gtx 570

Just my opinion. Definitely more future proof. Better multi card scaling.

Yeah it crashed for example when I ran the Windows experience index, and it was testing the Aero performance or some other graphical indicator...drivers started dying right away, and eventual total freeze. My friend have me some command prompt stuff to test GPU temperature/performance, and it froze up every time with those commands. Sadly I do not have another card to test it with, however I think I will go to Frys to pick up the TF II card -worst case scenario, if the problem is not the GPU, I can always return the older variant, no big deal.

Everything else seems to be up to date and running fine and very cool.

To be honest I am not too keen on the idea of unlocking the shaders, kind of uncomfortable with that sort of thing.

Thanks for all the feedback, appreciate it.

Unlocking shaders is foolproof.

Idk if the frozr 3 has a bios switch or not ( for what i know, all unlockable ones do ) you CANNOT mess up.

I guarantee you, it's that simple...so dont let the term flashing scare you away. if it fails, you have the original bios to back u up and boot into windows with.
