From what I've seen the 6970 is a bit faster than 570 but also a bit more expensive. It really comes down to preference, Nvidia usually has better drivers.
Because they can be had for cheap and IMO they are better than 570s. The GTX 480 is one of the best cards to overclock. TigerDirect had a deal for $240 on a GTX 480 and it didn't have the reference cooler so is not going to run hot.

The 6970 is on par with a 570, it may win at 2560x1600 by a tiny bit but that card alone is weak for that resolution if you plan on maxing everything.

Agreed, one or two monitors at 1920x1080p, or 3D gaming/movies the GTX 570. Three monitors or a monitor 30" or greater resolution the AMD 6970. Each card has their own strengths. Depends on your situation.

I'm having the same issue of choosing a card around that price range and I think im going to go with Asus GTX 570 DC II, although if you decided to SLI later, it might be a problem.

hrm...

570 is cool, but VRMs are weakened down,

6970 is cool as well, but a bit expensive..
And then there's the GTX 480, for $250, trade off is bigger power, but better VRMs for overclocking.
