You are correct. I misconstrued what actually happened but I'm wondering what exactly the hell was on that boom then. It could be a camera but it's too suspicious looking. It's not like they can use a camera attached to someone elses craft. Might have been there for posterity but given that it's aimed right at the Motors it gives me pause at least. Still the article did suggest "perfect conditions" so I'm sure that's not always a direct hit.

That's almost certainly a camera. It's likely aimed at the motors to get a close up of the damage caused.

If that was the laser, it would be vastly more impressive. A 15kw laser in that small of a package is completely unheard of. I would be surprised if the laser used in this test, and it's power supply, were not larger than the boat in the video.

The reference to perfect conditions is likely referring to the weather. No fog or spray in the way, no swells that would compromise line of sight, etc.

Well since ship-to-ship combat is now entirely BVR, this won't be used vs. another warship's hull structure. Rather, it would be used in harbor patrol, light craft interdiction (anti-piracy, for instance), and anti-air/anti-missile defense roles.

The real technological demonstration here is being able to keep the laser on target through wave action, not the energy output.

Our Radar capability being what it is couldn't pick up a dingy. Too small. That's why they send Coast Guard Aircraft to look for survivors of sunken vessels off the Coast of Alaska and around the world and why there are deck watches being stood by just about every Enlisted Sailor in the Navy regardless of weather conditions. Cause sometimes there are things that escape even our Radar Capability. I've stood enough of those myself. If there is a sighting you call it in. Much like standing watch at the Main gate on base really.

I'm not sure of what the designator is now, but when I served it was JP5. And the only thing that could put out a JP5 fire is AFFF or Acquiescent Film Forming Foam. That stuff if you just breath wrong can be set off. I exaggerate a bit but it's highly volatile. Which is a bit ironic because our Smoking area onboard was the Fantail. Sitting right atop the flight deck where there was a JP5 station to refuel Helos and Harrier Class aircraft located on the Port(left)side of the ship. Smoking area was Starboard but not very far away.
