No, doesn't change the Nvidia two display limit for single GPU cards:
Quote:
The card has two DVI ports, one full size HDMI port and one full size DisplayPort. Unlike AMD's latest GPUs, the output logic design is not as flexible. On AMD cards vendors are free to combine six TMDS links into any output configuration they want (dual-link DVI consuming two links), on NVIDIA, you are fixed to two DVI outputs and one HDMI/DP in addition to that. NVIDIA confirmed that you can use only two displays at the same time, so for a three monitor setup you would need two cards.

You wouldn't want to connect triple monitors with only a single card anyways though so that doesn't matter. The fps would be so horrible.
You also need a MST Hub(good luck finding one) to connect 3 30" monitors with 6970s. The DVI port is single link only which doesn't support 2560x1600. But who has 3 30" anyways?

I wasn't evaluating Nvidia's display limitations with that post, but purely answering krazyatom's question and stating a fact. But since you mention the topic it is quite obvious that AMD's display setup freedom and options are far superior to that of Nvidia's. The article I quoted even stated something similar to that fact, at least when it comes to display flexibility options board partners have. Gaming is not the only use for multi-monitor setups, and multi-monitor gaming is a pretty new feature that was only just introduced in the 5K series via Eyefinity and has been steadily maturing. Some people might just want extra monitors to increase the real-estate for say graphic design or multitasking, and there are many others I'm sure. True, for the most demanding games more than one card is most likely a necessity, but some less demanding games might run OK on a single card (at least those that support the multi-monitor resolutions). I'm not sure what your talking about with the DVI port, the HD6970 has one Single Link DVI and one Dual Link DVI port, unless your referring to the fact that both DVI ports can't be used with Eyefinity (I think that's the case, if my memory serves me right). I'm sure most people with Eyefinity setups use the cheaper 1440x900 to 1920x1200 resolution monitors. Cost is a big factor but it's also for the lower more playable resolutions they offer. A triple 2560x1600 setup would be out of this world expensive for the monitors and the GPUs needed to run them smoothly in games.
