honestly an i3 will do just fine. Overclock that bad boy to 4.0 ghz and you are golden. It think this is the cheapest way. a p55 or even an h55 board is good. add some good ram 2 x 2 gb for about 50 bucks and you are good. if you buy the parts used you will be paying a lot less.

i built my friend a rig with nothing but used parts for $530

i3 550 @ 4.0 ghz
zalman 9500 cooler
ASUS P7H55-M PRO
2 x 2 gb ripjaws 1600 mhz
corsair cx 500
8800 gts 512
500 gb wd black
1 tb f3
dvd-rw
brand new cooler master storm scout

You might as well consider getting a decent PSU to include to your upgrade.
