New build powers down immediately?

Thread Starter
Finished (or so I thought) my first build. Just got a copy of Windows 7 today, was ready to set up and install tonight, but when powering on, I get power for about 2-3 seconds then shuts off. System fans spin, but no sounds from HD and it powers off immediately every time, then is completely dead until I reset the CMOS, then does the same again. Any ideas? Board toast perhaps?(Although it is obviously getting some sort of power because the main rear case fan plugged into the board is spinnning?)

Sounds like a classic grounding issue. Double check your stand offs.

X's 2. I had the same problem and then figured out I forgot a screw on the motherboard. When my computer heated up, the board would move and touch the standoff and short out shutting my computer down. I installed the screw and never had a problem since.

All standoffs seem to be ok, just pulled the board back out to make sure I didn't have an extra standoff in there somewhere, no such luck. Still the same issue, comes on for about 2 seconds, spins all three case fans, shuts down.

Try booting the board with only the ram inserted. (re-seat the ram while you are at it)
