lol Thanks

This is the part of the project I've not been looking forward to. I've had a general idea of what I want but was unsure as to how well it would turn out or how I was going to go about it. I'm shooting for two very definite results. First it has to be sturdy. In total we're only looking to support 40-60 lbs of hardware. On top of that it has to be able to hold it's own weight which will easily be twice as much as the monitors. Sturdy I can do but that's where the second requirement comes in. It's got to look good and flow with the rest of the build. How to make it strong but still have some elegance about it?
By balancing perspective and strength.

I picked up 3 6ft lengths of 1x10 pine as well as a 6ft length of 2x6 doug fir.
About $32 in all. I also have a rough length of 2x4 cedar that's been lying around here for years.

Measured and marked for the size of the box (tabletop included).
We'll use this boot shape to tie the rack not only to the back of the desk but the bottom as well. It may be unnecessary but with this I'm also hoping to balance the added bulk of the back with a little added underneath.
It allows the verticals to hold themselves in place while I work as well.

I didn't want to guess when it came to cutting the rounded corner that would fit over the edge of the tabletop.
So I made a template. Using this small block I copied the shape best I could and cut it out with the jigsaw.

With a large piece of sandpaper held tight over the edge of the table sand the cut slowly and only in one direction FOREVER or until satisfied with the blocks perfection.
This is obviously a mock up for your viewing pleasure.

Not bad.

Ensuring that everything is square and straight I carefully screwed on a couple blocks.
Then drove a 2 inch screw up through the boot of each vertical into the rear of the desk frame to hold it in place.

The verts depth that comes out over the tabletop will get longer as we work our way out from the center.
At 5, 6, and finally 7 inches over the tabletop on the two outer verts.
This will form the angle to give the two outer monitors their wrap around look.

We'll tie in a few short lengths of 2x4 here and then one long run across the front.

Something like... this?... What the?.. I don't even...

Fast forward a bit. Apparently I failed at remembering pics again.
45'd edges of course.

Laid it on its side fully assembled to cut the hard way.
The 2x6 douglas fir will tie in here. A nice solid surface for the monitors to mount to compared to the pine.

And a little more fast forward.

I like. A little tooooo visible under the monitors and I don't like the look of all the verts resting so far over the table.

Lets fix that.

I'll get my $20 out of that hole saw after all.

Hey! There's a better overall view. Less confused now?
There's still a little more cutting to do.

Still enough left to rest a bit on the top and looks so much better than is squared counterpart.

A slightly better view of the bottom after it's been removed.

Purdy and Phillips head screws.. best two things to ever come out of Portland.

Pre Stain!

what are the holes for and then you sanded them down ... just for looks or what?

Yeah sorry didn't detail that out to well. You're correct. Nothing particular going on there. I just didn't like the look of those verts resting all so far out onto the desktop. No fans or anything going there lol.
