Yep! We're using Minwax Classic Black 1Step. It's a polyurethane/stain mix. There are a couple pics at the end of the last update.

Lots of time to work in between loads of laundry. wink.gif
No.. honestly what you've already seen I completed in about 6 weeks of work.
So there was a solid chunk of work log to get out. If I let it go any longer I'd have procrastinated getting it done. A lot of time was spent head scratching. I'd estimate... a good 40 hours of head scratching out of maybe.. 250-300 hours? It's hard to say with all the time spent with company over trying to explain what I they were looking at. The day I cut the holes for the fans I had the garage open. Within an hour I had 3 different neighbors wandering up. "Making a foosball table?" lol

The last couple weeks have just been me sifting through a mess of photos trying to get this work log half presentable. With a little work here and there. So updates will get shorter as we near the end but I'll try to keep pumping them out every day or so.

Meanwhile I've been letting the unit sit with monitors mounted and no table top support. It hasn't budged a cm even with 3 boys running laps around the house and banging into the monitor that hangs 9 inches past the side of the desk. I'm more scared for the monitors sake than the desk. thumb.gif I'm also waiting for a couple things to arrive.

Ah, I see.

Just out of curiosity, what part of Oregon do you live in? I've visited my uncle/aunt/cousins a while back when they lived near Portland and then last year in Bend.

And was that a cat in your avatar? tongue.gif

Awesome work, being a chippy myself, I can see the hard work and head scratching needed for and EPIC build like this one.

Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Up next!
I guess you could say this will be a wee bit of a teaser update.

First a little hardware. Then on to a little stain (which I know little about and have actually have used even less). I finished the last update with a pic of prestain being applied to the case. It's supposed to help the wood abosrb the stain evenly. The prestain is awful awful awful extremely toxic stuff and I'm not entirely sure it helped. The stain took to the pine very nicely but I had to lay it on thick to the oak for it to take. Admittedly I didn't take many photos of the entire process as I was usually covered in stain.

MSI 790fx-gd70
She's worked hard for me now for just over a year.

These boards get decent temps on the nb when you slap a fan on the heatsink but I want to avoid that now to keep it looking clean. So I pulled it, cleaned the old TIM (aka chisel what looks like decade old bubblegum TIM off the block and chipset with your fingernail) and used a dab of MX-2. I have a couple (one for a shroud) 18mm (I believe? need sleep... biggrin.gif) fans that will screw to the i/o panel just above the nb sink. That should make up for the fan not being directly on the heatsink.. hell might even get better temps trading the bubbleyum for the MX-2
Eventually I'll put the nb/sb under water but not on this board.

3be195.jpg

It's kind of hard to tell but the lower left corner has quite a bit of yellowing around the plastic of the socket. I wonder if it's something I should worry about from pushing the boards limits while overclocking? Or if it's just from dust gathering there. The way it was located in my old case left that corner hard to clean and was really dusty when I pulled it all out.

And now stain.
Here are a couple of shot of the first coat. It'll get much much darker.

Sorry about the quality of these.
Another angle on this contraption.

See... they're good for more than just large building blocks. tongue.gif

I lost my receipt for those slides so I've yet to get a longer set on there. frown.gif
You can see the dugouts on the right side that the rollers will settle into.

I leave you with a little something to wet your noodle.
