280.19

Just got done with the bench's I'll be writing up everything soon, should be up in the next couple hours.

By the way, crysis 1 and metro 2033 seem to love this driver. lol so run your metro2033 benchmark for the highest possible gain. Head over to the metro 2033 benchmark thread and post some scores!!!

Stay tuned for the review.

well I told you lol, I also want you to add that it fixes Crysis2 physx problem (where it flickers) but there is one glitch I just noticed but not sure if it driver or what but the Focus Display on my multi monitor set up keeps switching to the other display on restart but as long as I reapply at start up it works fine but small price to pay for all the other gains, after all it is a Beta

Hey guys long awaited review of the beta 280.19 here. You can download it from HERE.

Just a recap from my previous testing, SLI vs Single of the 275.33, majority of the times the driver did well in both DX10 and DX11, the 270.51 still maintained top spot in vantage under single card mode with a score of 18542, however, under SLI the the new driver has shown an improvment from the 266.58 which is the top one for SLI so far. Again we saw in the heaven benchmark the 275.33 doing very well in comparison to the 266.58., however, user's have reported huge bugs in gaming therefore I recommended keeping the 275.33 for benching purposes and use the 266.58 for all gaming purposes.

As far as im aware SLI scaling is quite dependant on usage and vice versa, so I have taken ss of afterburner to help see the the actual gpu usage. I understand that there problems with drivers, from downclocking and staying in 2d or just scaling issues but I hope that these results can help

So would great to see how the new 280.19 beta driver does against the others.

here we go

Metro Benchmark tool - DX11 - 1920x1080 - Tesselation (enabled) - Very High - AAA - AF16x - No Physx or DOF GPU at 870/1740/2050

SINGLE CARD TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

SLI TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

Now this very interesting, seems like nvidia is doing something right. Here we can clearly see a fps gains in both SINGLE and SLI mode. In single mode the FPS jumped from 29 to 33, a 4fps increase which is pretty good, however the most gain was under SLI with 7fps.

Now we may look at the scaling and think that is terrible in terms of the 266.58, however, the difference's are there because of the min and max fps. That basically means that scaling from single to SLI might not be up there, but because of the minmum fps and maximum fps provide a good average, so fps scaling in this instance is not as important.

Compared to the earlier successor, the 275.33, the minimum fps in single mode was 1fps less and maximum fps jumped over 20fps which was really good. Looking very good so far.

To conclude this part, for single card mode winner is 280.19, for SLI the winner is 280.19.

Now to Crysis GPU @ 870/1740/2050

SINGLE CARD TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

SLI TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

Wow, it may not be a HUGE increase but it's a pretty significant one. Here the 280.19 shined again, which was actually quite suprising to me because of crysis running DX10 rather than DX11, obviously at this point I thought we may only see increases in DX11 but that's not the case here.

Under single mode it got an extra 3fps from the 275.33 and under SLI it got a 6fps improvment. From testing all these drivers, this is the one so far showing the MOST improvments. As you can see from the Afterburner monitoring graph, usage pretty much stayed the same with all those drivers and scaling was the same due to the average fps..

The min and max fps of the 266.58 (which was the best for SLI) showed 41min and 71max, the 280.19 compared to that showed a 31min fps and a max of 76fps which was not really a good thing. If it maintained the minimum fps the same as the 266.58 under SLI then it would be a clear cut winner, however it is when you think about 'Average' fps.

The 270.51 under SINGLE mode showed the best performance before, however with a min fps of 22 and max fps 36 the 280.19 did a little better, minimum fps at 25 and max at 40. From this you can say that for single card mode and for crysis, the 280.19 is brilliant and for SLI it's just as good. Again, another suprising improvment.

To conclude this part, for single card mode winner is the NEW 280.19, for SLI the winner is again the NEW 280.19.

Now Crysis Warhead GPU @ 870/1740/2050

SINGLE CARD TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

SLI TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

From previous testing we saw that under SINGLE card mode, the 275.27 and 275.33 were on par and under SLI it was the 275.33 that did the best. Here can so a very very small improvment form the 275.33. I thought it did pretty well with crysis and was quite optimistic and thought it would do the same accross the whole of the testing but it wasn't to be. Not sure what happend here.

Both usage and scaling were pretty much the same but lets see where and if there were any real improvments in terms of minimum and maximum fps. The 275.33 maintained under single card a min fps of 26 and a max of 41, the 280.19 has a min fpa 27 and max of 40. No real improvement there. Under SLI the 275.33 maintained a minimum fps of 48 and a maximum fps of 78, the 280.19 did a little better with the min fps, coming in at 51 and having a maximum fps of 78. Which was pretty good. Under single mode, the 280.19 did pretty much the same as the 275.33 and the same in SLI, however, the minimum fps jumps makes it a little better.

To conclude the Warhead benchmark, for single card mode winner is the NEW 280.19, for SLI the winner is again the NEW 280.19.

Lets take a look at Heaven Benchmark tool 2.1 GPU @ 870/1740/2050

SINGLE CARD TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

SLI TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

This is interesting again, I really thought that Warhead was just a little hiccup and the driver will come back to life again, not the case. From it's previous successor which clearly won the heaven benchmark spot, the 275.33 still maintained top spot, but lets see why 280.19 didn't aswell.

Usage in the afterburner graph were very similar so that's really wasn't the issue, so looking at the minimum fps and maximum fps we might be able to see what happened. The 275.33 under single mode had min 20fps and max 73fps, the 280.19 had a min 24fps and max 67fps which obviously effected the average. Same thing happened in SLI. Not so great. With a single card score of 894, it's still a littel behind the 275.33. In SLI it produced a score of 1587, which again was behind the 275.33

To conclude this part, the 275.33 remained TOP for both single and SLI

Finally lets take a look at vantage GPU @ 870/1740/2050

SINGLE CARD TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

SLI TEST - Nvidia 280.19 (BETA)

Now these results are very interesting, the 270.51 still maintains top spot in vantage under single card mode with a score of 18542, same with the 275.33 under SLI. The driver started of really good but slowly deteriorated. We saw the big improvments in Metro 2033 and crysis but since then it hasn't been all that. With a GPU score of 16317 in single mode and 31573 in SLI, it hasn't done as well as I thought it would do.

To conlcude Vantage, my vote still goes for the 275.33

Overall conclusion of this driver

This driver showed big improvments in both dx10 and dx11, however, was not consistant, No idea why but im sure some of you guys may know. It's a tough one, mainly because it shows improvment in an old game as well as a pretty recent one which has dx11.

I would still say that the 275.33 is the best one for benching BUT it certainly matters which benchmark you are running because the 280.19 is slighly better in metro as apposed to the 275.33. previously I have said that the best one for gaming is the 266.58 due to the bugs that the newer drivers have had in some games, now unless the bug fixes have been addressed in the 280.19, then I suggest you stay with the 266.58, but if you find that it works fine for you then nvidia has made a driver that is both great for benching and gaming, which I havn't really found yet.

Short and sweet, get the 280.19 because it has improvments over the 266.58 and 275.33 in benching and might have those bug fixes that everyone is looking for!!!!!

These drivers are still problematic in gaming, therefore SLI users should still stay with the 266.58 and use THIS to add SLI profiles when needed. For SINGLE card users the 270.51 is still TOP

Just a note: These new drivers continue to give me the same problem I had with the 275.33, ie windows display and custom resolution which you can read about at the bottom of the 275.33 review.

Hope you enjoyed this review and hope it's helped you Feedback is appreciated

EDIT:

Seems that these drivers have still got a lot of bugs!!! arghhhh!!!! SLI users stick to the 266.58 and SINGLE card users stick to the 270.51 / 275.27 / 270.61 whichever is best for gaming.

Thanks so much for the benchmark! I'm still using 270.61 for the moment, will wait for the WHQL that's coming out this week.

No worries, the 270.61 is a solid driver and works very well. Stay on it lol Not sure as to qhat happened to the new beta 280.19 in certain bennchmarks, it did very well in metro2033 compared to all the others, saem with crysis but then it just kind crapped out on that performance lol

Hopefully the new driver will have a few bug fixes, im hopeful of that because of the beta 280.19 improvments in the beginning of my testing. lol

Glad that you liked it, thanks

First off: nice reviews, man!

But I must report a bug here on the new drivers: they've crapped on Shogun 2 SLI profile and fix. With them I was getting some graphics corruption (as on the original bug with the march drivers) and only one card gets used. Tried updating sli profiles after installing but the problem persists. Went back to the 275.33: both cards get normal usage and got 97.9fps on the game's official bench at the "1080p Dx11 high" settings, so nearly perfect scaling on my rig, no bugs no problem.

thanks bud, seems lately these drivers are having sooo many issue's with some games. Hopefully the next driver will address some of these issue's.

Thanks for the feedback

It's cool, man

Anyway, it just looks like they removed (by accident?) the SLI profile fix for that game from the driver. It's just frustrating that even adding the SLI upgrade (06/2011) by itself doesn't solve the problem.

Other than that I did get some more fluctuation on Metro2033's bench. Max fps increased by a bit but minimum decreased at the same time (Adv. PhysX and DOF on, the rest is the same as your benching above) so, it might be some driver mess on my own pc, though.

P.S.: by the way, you have a very nice OC on your 460s, eh?!

My 460's clock pretty well, max I got from them stable enough for a metro benchmark was 970core and 2150 memory.

Unfortunatly I have the retail crysis 2 (not from steam) so afaik I can't run the crysis 2 benchmark. correct me if im wrong

Here's a Metro Benchmark tool - DX11 - 1920x1080 - Tesselation (enabled) - Very High - AAA - AF16x - No Physx or DOF GPU at 970/1940/2150
