Replacing CPU

Thread Starter
Can I swap out an i7 920 with a 17 990x without reloading the operating system?

I am doing a new build soon, currently have the i7 920, wondering if I can postpone the expenditure of the 990x for a bit longer without causing problems.

Cheers!

Yup! only if you change out to a different motherboard will you have to worry about a reinstall..and the obvious boot drive replacement.

You might have to validate windows again, but thats all.

Windows 7 will handle it fine. Just boot it up like normal.

I just swapped out my motherboard (Gigabyte EP35 --> Gigabyte p67), CPU (q6700 --> i2500k), RAM, PSU, Optical drive, and graphics card. Before I popped in my new parts, I tried to do sysprep, but it was making me upset, so I just installed the new parts.

I fully expected to have to reinstall Windows. However, after the first POST I thought, "Meh, let's see what happens....screw it." Windows booted up fine, so I installed all the drivers for the new hardware. It's been about 2-3 weeks now with 0 problems and great performance.

Short version: Yeah, it'll work fine. You might have to re validate windows (but that's easy, you just click a button...don't have to type your key again or anything.)
