Question about radiator templates

Thread Starter
I'm planning a case mod that I'd like to eventually use water cooling. Right now I can't afford the water cooling bits and pieces but I'd like to do the cutouts on the case so I could later add the water cooling radiators. Do radiators follow a standard hole pattern or is it specific to the manufacturer? Are there templates I can use to do the cut outs now and later pick out a radiator and it'll fit?

You can pick out any rad you want and find the dimensions easily for your box. Most rads have 2 barbs at one end of the rad and the mounting holes are the same as any 120/140 mm fan depending on if you get a 120mm fan based rad or a 140mm fans based rad. You can tell where rads will fit by if you can fit a fan there or not. If you can fit 2 120mm fans at the top of your case then you can fit a 120 x2 rad there. Or you can always mod a case if there is room to create additional space for a longer rad.

Most rads have a 15mm spacing between the fans, Older PA series rads from Thermochill used 25mm.

There are some templates listed here, not sure what size rad you are wanting to use.

The case I'm modding does not have any cutouts for fans or rads (circa 2003) so I'm looking to do a cut out on the top of the case for a 240mm rad and a 360mm rad on the bottom (top mounted PSU). I guess I may just have to decide on the rads now and do the cut outs and buy them later. I was hoping there was a standard for the hole spacing so I could do the cut outs now and decide later on which rad to get.

Easiest thing to do if you are going to mod the case is grab the dimensions from the manufacture's website use a low tac tape and tape up your cutting surfaces and use the dimensions to trace an outline. You can then draw a center line down the middle of the rad stencil and use any 120 mm fan to work out hole placement. You can also buy rad grills which have the correct hole alignment for drilling the case/fan mounting holes.

Just an example you can see the hole spacing for standard 120mm fans. (http://www.frozencpu.com/products/im...?tl=g30c95s519) That would be your ideal stencil. Could also ask others who might have the rad you are going to purchase measure out the holes for you as well.
