Extremely wrong. IBM has a crapload of money; they make so much $$ out of high end servers that selling to the end consumers wasn't profitable anymore for them, that's why they seem almost gone.
The fact that they experiment and deliver extremely advanced technology since 100 years also tells me that they are anything but "too old".

Let's talk about this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC3IryWr4c8

It's not all servers and supercomputers though. IBM supplies the CPUs for the PS3, 360 and Wii... Then only real winner of this generation of console war was IBM tongue.gif

/uneducated opinion.

IMO, it all depends on profitability. If it's more financially viable (read:cheaper) to switch to this new stuff then the switch will happen sooner. You also have to think of the competitiveness bewteen AMD and Intel, neither wants the other to be the first to start using the next big thing, so they'll also be pressured to push forward.

I hope people realize this doesn't mean you will see a 155ghz CPU... individual transistors have been demonstrated at speeds well above this. (Heck THIS thread on overclock shows a 1THz transistor back in 2009) ...

One transistor doesn't make up a CPU.

Also, another thing is graphene is not as amazing as all these articles will lead to you believe, but that would take a Phd thesis to explain why.

Will, in three or four years, AMD and Intel be the "old makers" whereas IBM will be the overkill processor make? O.O

Edit: Thinking about it, I read something about fullerenes applicated to electronics (graphene transistors, essentially), and they said that the amount of graphene requiered to do a processor of today's size is around 50 times more expensive than the cost of a high end system nowadays.

Just the raw material, let alone the manufacturing of it, because silicon can be smelted, but graphene...? It has a five times higher smelting point.

since this is single transistor implementation, we see such high clocks. when we talk about a billion transistor, clocks will be much lower because of heat and power consumption. but i hope eventually we will break the 4 GHz wall on stock clocks. smile.gif
and 10 GHz wall on overclocks smile.gif
