HD6970 Temp Concern - Page 4

Thanks guys, really appreciate the feedback.

The fan noise does not bother me, worrying about the longevity of the fan does however. That is another reason I have endured higher temps thinking that sub 100c was high but still in range.

I am 95% sure that it doesn't interfere with Overdrive. So no, don't uninstall them. RockHardMcNasty pointed out nicely how the fan speeds should be set up in Afterburner. After that try again Metro 2033 and monitor you temps- if they are still bad you should disassemble your GPU cooler and apply new TIM. Sometimes this happens out of factory: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=135378

Can you post a link to your card. With stock cooler my HD 6950 Unlocked would idle ~ 42C and load 65-75C depending on the game. This was with fan profile in MSI AB. With stock fan profile the card would hit 90C easily. You also did not apply the fan profile for your card.

1 x XFX HD-697A-CNFC Radeon HD 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

That's from my order history, I'm liking afterburner.. the default fan scale seems more tweaked than yours Rockhard?

At 47% fan speed btw, im at 45c.

Funny, it's been deactivated.

Yeah, I didn't like the default afterburner profile. 50% for 50c and below gives me nice idle temps and that speed isn't very loud as far as I'm concerned. And it keeps my cards cooler under load vs the default profile.

I have the same card as you for my primary card. it's been deactivated for a while, that's why my second card is from MSI.

Just did about a 30 minute session in Metro, all maxes, ML and adaptive MSAA in Catalyst on. It is also hot here, about 82F inside.

Mb max 48/ 49/ 48
1055T X6 all 6x at 39c @ 3.2 GHz (I should probably OC a tad higher)
6970 80c /w afterburner default fan stepping and 100% speed.

Yes it helps, isn't this fan going to die faster than the card itself if you run it like that though?
Doesn't XFX have lifetime warranty? Well it might die, it might not. I have seen a situation where new GPU fan ran for 5 minutes @100% and 2 fins broke, but it was bad plastic. Well my concern would be the noise that fan generates. If you have spare cash and would like better cooling and db ratio then I advise you to get an aftermarket cooler but now your load temperature is normal because Metro 2033 is very extreme for GPU and most of the other games don't torture your GPU so much.

Thank you, I will continue to tweak the fan graph, and just end up replacing the GPU cooler if it dies before I feel the need to get an entire new card.

The noise is not soo much an issue as I use headphones or speakers when I'm really into it, and when I play without audio it's interesting to get reactions out of people when they hear the jet engines take off lol.

I generally wan't to get about another 1.5 years out of this if I can. I bought it in December or January. I am a pretty heavy gamer so hopefully those months of 90c temps didn't take too heavy a toll.

Now to work on getting away from Overdrive and into my Bios... thanks guys

dude i think theres something wrong with your card. May be the HSF is not properly mounted. If you can do it yourself, its a good idea to re-seat the HSF but if you cant or wont for warranty's sake, its better to RMA it. I have a reference model powercolor HD 6950 2GB which unlocked and running to HD 6970 speeds @ 1.175 vcore and using a custom fan profile where the minimum fan speed is 60% and the max is 70% i am getting 38c-40c idle temps and 69-70c load temps using furmark. I have powertune at +15%. My room temp is like 30-31 C. My case is a NZXT Tempest EVO
