Microsoft could learn a few marketing things from Valve and just have a Steam-style sale of Windows 7 during the weekend for like 50% off.. they could raise the Windows 7 usage percentage by more than they think almost overnight. Sometimes people are hanging on to XP because of price. If the price is right, why not ?

actually when windows 7 was showcased and launched, it had one of the lowest prices for upgrades/retails/oem's to date, it was priced to sell then. reducing the price is not always guaranteed to boost sales or usage.

considering most people upgrade OS's when they purchase a new machine, it should be an indication that its not so much windows 7 just isn't moving, people are seeing less of a reason to upgrade, lots of "vista" machines came with the option to "install xp" instead of vista...and they were some pretty decently powerful machines. dual and quadcores of even 4 years ago, are still pretty relevant today, no need to upgrade to a new machine if there is no reason to, and most software and games really haven't given people to move onto latest and greatest.

Spend most of my time optimising my pc.

In xp it uses just 168 mb.
i was talking out of the box, where most people keep their software on a majority of default settings...7 and vista have virtually identical memory footprints...sounds like you are using a nlite/vlite copy of xp/7 to compare to an non-custom version of vista...i'm also sure you have aero disabled and running the "old style" taskbar to get that sort of memory footprint in 7, just not buying a solid 500 mb sorry.

Usage share is highly dependent on businesses. Windows 7 market growth will stagnate at some point because businesses are still using XP. It is very expensive to buy more volume licences, and even with a 50% off sale it's not cheap. Then there's also the cost of labour to get everything up and running, and the lost revenue from unproductive staff who can't work out where Word is.

My company is probably more likely to replace their XP desktops with Linux, but I don't see it happening in the near future.

Exactly...

It's not the software cost of the upgrade that is holding many enterprise class companies back with Windows XP (and Win2000)... It's the labor cost, downtime, server integration and application compatibility. It would literally kill my companies' productivity for months (not to mention our AR system won't even run on Windows 7......)

No mate. I have aero enabled. The top of each window is transparent.
Not using any lite version.
Uncustomised Windows 7.
Do you want a screen shot proving the same?
Right after boot usage is 500 mb.
After many hours of gaming, listening to gaming rises to 700 mb. Never crosses 1 gb.

What's with the business programs that makes them can't run on window 7?
