Having a seperate card for physX?

Thread Starter
Hey folks,

Ive seen a few guys around here who have a dedicated nvidia card for physx. Some of them even had an ATI card and a nvidia card (for physx).

Could someone explain, or link an explanation of what physx is, why its important, ect...

You guys are awesome and OCN rocks!

Thanks, GINK

Basically, if I understand it correctly, the purpose of having a dedicated card is to take the load off of the main card.

You may want to watch this though if you are considering a dedicated card:

Nvidias physx site, As far as i know nvidia is the only maker that supports physx. Basically its used to simulate realistic physics in games that support it (although not that many titles use it) . In terms of video cards, you should have something like an nvidia 8800gt/9800gt (or a gts 250) and above.

it's useless... if you have a GTX 470 or higher, it's powerful enough on its own. and there aren't many games with PHysx to begin with.

I don't have the numbers right now, but i DID do a comparison test and I found that OVERALL, having a PhysX card gave me LESS FPS than not. It's simply not worth it.

But it also depends on your graphics card. Chances are if you're playing a game that utilizes PhysX, your rig is fine enough without one and better off.

Physx is worth it, dont let anyone else tell you otherwise. But you get that only with nVidia cards, since ATi cards dont do Physx.. Learn more on the subject first before you make any judgments.

But you need a good card to use it as physx, like most people use crappy cards for it, like a 9600 or a 240 with a 480 is going to slow it down.. they dont realize that thew faster their graphics card the faster physx card they need. Anything below 9800gtx is a waste of time and money for physx, Mafia 2 and few other games benefit a lot from physx. I have used my 260GTX with my 460 and later used my 460 with my 480 sli for physx..

An older midrange card will still benefit a card like a 470. Having a GTX260 as a PhysX card easily outperformed my GTX560 SOC by itself in the Mafia 2 benchmark.

In my experience, a dedicated PhysX card is definitely worth having if you pair it with an ATI card. I can't really say much about having a dedicated PhysX card with with an already powerful nvidia card for your main GPU though.

Do not let this comment sway you either. I disagree with whole heart. I personally ran a 9800 GTX+ dedicated to Physx. Let me tell you what I experienced. The only - I repeat only - place where I could appreciate Physx was in the Mafia II benchmark because I could see the stuff flying and not disappearing. Outside of it, it is worth crap. My 9800 GTX+ sits there at 30c idle warming up the case with 0% load. Occasionally during fights in Metro 2033, I could see its usage go up to like 10% and I know Physx is going on - but do I see the eye candies?! heck no ! that game is already so dark and gloomy, you do not just see the extra stuff flying around. Mafia II, when I was playing the game, there is not one lick of difference in game play experience when you have physx on versus off. You really have to look hard all around you (environment) to even experience Phsyx. I get so engrossed in the game play, I do not remember to see a piece of metal laying on the ground and go 'yay! I see a piece that flew off from that explosion'. Bottom line, I threw the 9800 GTX+ in a spare rig I built and is getting much better use. So, there you go - my opinion on Physx.
