Router Suggestions

Thread Starter
Okay guys, here's my predicament.

Im a Semi-Pro Call of Duty player. Therefore I ALWAYS have the team over for practice, and we all have computers, iphones (or wifi devices) and alot of random stuff that obviously uses internet such as Xboxs and PS3s. I currently have the Comcast Ultra Package, I get around 62 Down, and 10 Up. My current router is a small netgear they gave me with installation, but my biggest problem is the fact that I cant use wireless (+ LAN) with it because it gets really bogged down and then restarts. I need some suggestions for a new router than can COMPLETELY support everything i need. I need it to support LAN well and obviously wireless N is a plus.

Pretty much I need a well-rounded router. Price needs to be under 150 if possible.

Thanks in advance guys!

I really like my d-link router (though I only have the wired version). The integrated traffic shaping actually works pretty well at keeping ping times down when other network activity is happening. I can usually be uploading a file at near my max speed (of only 256k) and ping google with less than 80ms.

Oh ok, that really well priced for the features.
What about port forwarding, UPnP, and stuff like that?

If it has all the features of mine then you should be pretty happy. I've never had a problem with the port forwarding on my router or the UPnP. Although I don't use UPnP very much due to its lesser security. Overall the UI on mine is pretty slick. I'd imagine the wireless one would be similar. For reference this is my router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127060&Tpk=dgl%204100

Try to get a router that you can install DD-WRT or Tomato on, it really improves router performance during high LAN loads and as a plus you can set it up to prioritize game traffic so you get less lag.

If you don't need gigabit or wireless N I recommended the WRT54GL. (Only if your going to install DD-WRT or Tomato on it though, the default firmware is not great)

The router should be below $60 and can easily do much more then the $100+ routers available. Both those custom firmwares have great interfaces and perfect UPnP, you can even do stuff like block ads on the whole network or something like that.

I had a linksys router once. Transferring over LAN was slower than downloading from the internet, even with DD-WRT. It's why I don't ever recommend them. Also, I was always having trouble resolving host names.

Well thats the only thing, I want Gigabit if possible, is the router mentioned in the second post a gigabit router?

There are plenty of DD-WRT and Tomato (viktek mod) compatible routers that have Gigabit Ethernet, Linksys E2000 would fit your bill. It's about 90 bucks.

I have never had those problem klue22, but I run Tomato now mainly for the better interface.

I'd definitely go with the Asus RT-N16 over the D-link 655 any day of the week. Has the power handle what you're going to be throwing at it, better hardware than the 655 (combine it with DD-WRT and you'll definitely be able to get the most out of the router) and it does also come with gigabit ports like you are looking for. Been running mine with DD-WRT for about 7 months now and couldn't be any happier.

How could I have forgotten about the Asus RT-N16, you get a much faster CPU in there then many routers. I think it is about 533 Mhz. I don't remember about how much ram thought but I think it is way more then enough (compared to the other routers).
