Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't detect logical cores

Thread Starter
Hey guys, complete Linux nub here. I've spent around 3-4 hours trying to find the answer on google and I can't seem to come up with anything relevant. I've managed to set up Ubuntu 10.10 in VMware Player 3.0 in my attempt to fold bigadv in Linux. The setup and updates went without issue, but it only seems to detect my 4 physical cores and not my 4 logical cores.

I have checked that the kernel supports SMP but I haven't found a way to enable HT. Pretty much all the solutions I've come across were for grub and not grub2. The closest I've come is to find the /boot/grub/grub.cfg, which is supposed to replace the menu.lst. Am I just supposed to add the ht=on flag here?

Currently 4am, going to be hopeful for an answer in the morning, thanks!

not sure how vmware palyer 3.0 works, but you should have an option to set how many "cores" you want to expose to vmware...are you following a guide? do you have noapic or any other "custom" boot options enabled in grub, as some of them will automatically disable HT.

It's not linux it's vmware, I don't know how to set it (didn't look hard enough) but I know it's not linux. Linux will use whatever it can see, if it can't see that the cpu has HT on it won't use it. It's probably a problem with direct hardware access.

Hmm. You could check /proc/cpuinfo perhaps? I'm assuming you're talking about hyper-threaded cores when you say logical cores?

Perhaps that could help you out. It could just be an issue with VMware though.

You need VMware to be set to give 8 cores to the VM.
The VM won't be able to detect logical cores since each vm core is it's own process and can only fill one thread on the host CPU.
Yes, your cpu is an 8 core chip as far as VMware is concerned.

Hrm. My vmware only lets me set 4 cores though.

I did the /proc/cpuinfo and it only shows 0-3, which is 4 cores. I'm also using Player 3.0.0 since I heard the later versions have issues with FAH.

then you are SOL, you wont be able to use more than four cores, try virtual box, i think it allows you to "assign" max cpu's of 8 with a HT enabled cpu, it will of course complain, but none-the-less do it smile.gif

The version of VMware you're using only supports 4 cores per CPU. You need to upgrade VMware.
