That's because Windows 7 is brand new, and Linux doesn't change, it just grows, so driver support is never eliminated across OS's.

This discussion will go on forever, I can see clearly by your avatar and signature that you're not going to be one to let Windows even draw with Linux.

ahhh the age old argument. Linux is the most secure and customizable OS however not the easiest to use. Windows is easy to use, can be buggy at times but is easy and there is plenty of software to do whatever you want. Mac is good for it's ease of use for digital media projects.

You mean to tell me a 5 year old OS is brand new? OK.

There is no need for a "draw" it is what does what best. An OS is meant to be a tool just like any other software. Use it likewise. So for me; Windows is a gaming and "god I need a GUI/super easy program to do something" tool. Linux just works out for me on everything else.

I actually use windows quite often, i was in it for several hours earlier, and spend a great deal of time in it for various reasons...as for my signature and avatar...

avatar is satire, a friend of mine sent it to me one day, thought it was funny, i use it in quite a few places, just not here on OCN for my avatar...

as for my signature, simple observations about how people are on tech forums and software help forums, the other parts, mostly satire.

i do believe both OS's have their place in this world, and to compare them so subjectively is ignorant...

as long as people hold both of them in blind feverish revere, then trying to move past which one is "better", will only end in arguments and a lot of qq from both sides...i can list the things i like and how i use linux, and i can do the same for windows if you like? and i could also compile a list of things i dislike about both OS's, can't treat one unfairly ya know, just to make the other "look" better.

i installed ubuntu netbook edition a few days ago, been playing with it and trying to get used to the layout. I use my netbook for work, pretty much all I do is use text editor and chromium. Dual boot with win 7 starter, it feels like win 7 runs faster for me. Think Im doing something wrong?

yes.

vlc should be in the repository already.

chrome you will actually have to go to google's download site for it and grab the .deb file (grab the version that matches your OS, 32bit or 64bit.). you could always try chromium, which i believe is version matched to chrome right now (chromium is the opensource project to chrome)

sudo apt-get install vlc chromium

^this command will net you both programs.
