GTX 580 and 120hz

So i just upgrade to Alienware Optx 3D monitor. The question i have for you guys is when i run black ops or BFBC2 at 120hz it feels like its lagging but im maintaining over 85fps With the highest settings and AA. I also try switching back to 60hz but that it feels supperrrrrrrr laggggyyyy. its like most my games don't feel smooth anymore. Unless im getting over 120fps but if i turn 60hz on and i get over 60 fps it doesn't feel smooth either. I know hz dont mean fps but i dont know how to explain it.

After experiencing this i went to a friends house, who has a gtx 570 and has 60hz monitor 1080p 23 inch monitor. His 570 Manges to get over 60 fps in those games to at max res and max settings and it doesnt feel laggy at all. i can tell differnece with smoothing from 120hz to 60hz but its not as bad as what im experiencing. Plus i get bad screen tearing at 60hz.

I have Install different drivers(Currently on 270)Also have try lowering Res, Settings, Overclocking the GPU , i have dual link DVI cable, done some NVCP tweaks too and vsync on or off Also, CPU and GPU Temps are great too. Try different AA from off-32x i still get the same feel.

Can anyone explain whats going on ?

Is it me ? I want to SLI so i can start using 3D vision with good FPS. should i just go ahead and pull the trigger ?

Thank you.

Are you saying that a game running at over 60fps on a 120hz monitor isn't as smooth as a game running at over 60 fps on a 60hz monitor?

Yeah pretty much. Its hard to explain. When i have it at 60hz with vysnc off Black ops is running at 125fps but seems to laggish and then when i put 120hz on it runs fine but then i start getting some major stuttering or some laggy feeling.

It may be the consistancy dipping.

Like how old television at 24 fps seemed smooth because it was the constant 24 fps.

i have tried my 460s ( both single GPU and SLI ) on black ops on my samsung 2233rz (also 120hz). I have never felt it lagging or feeling sluggish before, but I never play with v-sync on. I have the ability to max out a few games at 120 fps but my old cs 1.6 instincts force me to always leave it off.

If you're playing with 3D vision off, then consider disabling stereoscopic 3D in the Nvidia control panel.

My benchmark scores are lower when "Enable stereoscopic 3D" is checked in the control panel. There is a performance hit just from checking that option, even when 3D vision is off.

I just purchased the same monitor Alienware AW2310 and don't have any issues. I'm not running 3D yet. I get to highest around 80fps in parts in others lower depending on what's being displayed and activity in game. No stuttering or lag however. Running the latest driver not in beta atm 267.24. I also played maxed out for a 1920x1080p resolution. Using the dual DVI cord as connection for 120hz refresh rate. I got more clarity as well as opposed to my 60hz monitor, but I didn't have any lag on that either.

Did you check in the Nvidia control panel if you have stereoscopic 3D enabled or not like Partol suggested yet? Card seated tightly? How about your internet connection? Anyone else using bandwidth in your household while your gaming? Any other software running updates or virus scans during game play? Hmmmmm.

Force v-sync from the NV control panel (and not in-game).
That should fix the the "laggy" feeling.

Do you force the game at 120hz ? or do you leave it at 60hz ? i can play the game too over 120 fps but sometimes will dip to 78fps lowest i have seen on the Berlin wall.

I actually went as far as not installing the 3d vision stuff in-till i can rule out that wasn't or was the case. I thought that was the problem last night.... but after about 5 mins it start doing the same thing

Try using that driver. also using the Dual dvi port. Try both dvi ports on my gpu. So you have it set to 120hz in game ? or 60? My internet is fine. Im the only person in the house that use a desktop everyone use laptop for school and playing FB games. Reseated the card. I unstall my ESET Anti Virus program too.

I have force it through there and in the game. with Triple Buffering too on and off.

Im going to go ahead and format today and see if that fixs somethings for me. That may solve the problem. Idk.

I can record a video if ppl would like. Idk if its me or what.

I have experienced what your talking about on my GD235Hz but I have never been able to replicate it in all titles. It appears in titles that have a VSync option (but set it to 60 FPS) as opposed to 120 fps for my monitor.

The instant I enable/disable Vsync the issue is removed. If I am consistently around 120~130 fps I try and run Vsync on as I am not losing anything but running at a flat 120 FPS, but in some random titles, its been 60 or even 30 FPS cap. Its atrocious laggy, far more than what I think 60 FPS would be. I also want mention that you should never feel laggy at 80 fps, so a faulty monitor maybe a possibility, monitors are not immune from faults. You may see screen tearing under 120 fps on a 120 hz monitor, but it should still feel very fluid at 60+ fps.

I have managed to improve this at times, but ALT+Tabbing in and out of games, or switching Fullscreen to Window Mode back to Fullscreen can alleviate this issue.

After a while, I assume with driver/profile updates, this issue has slowly disappeared for me, that and I have SLI which is definitely a powerhouse for gaming.

Try different driver sets. I had really good performance in beta drivers 267.85/ 267.59 /267.91.
