It's time

Thread Starter
That's right. I finally think it's time for me to plunge into the mobility world. This lappy will be in use for a long time. I figured with the recent timing of sandy bride and the core I series, I might as well buy a good laptop.

What is your maximum budget?
I would have to say $1500

What country are you in?
The weirdest but most awesome country of U.S.A

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Everything. Surfing the web, OCN, gaming, etc etc.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Not really.

What screen size do you require?
My brother has an 18.4'' laptop. I now realize I want to be able to have my shoulder intact by the end of the day =). So the sweet spot of 15.6'' it is.

What screen resolution do you require?
The highest which I would think is 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. Something Near or at HD quality.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/re-certified/used be okay?
New.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) I would say 2 -4 hours.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Dead space 2, Portal 2, basically Steam.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Win 7 Pro if Possible.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Not sure. What are the options and which one would be best.

How much hard drive space do you need?
Hoping Main would be SSD just for OS *Around 100 Gigs* and the second HDD around 750 Gigs

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Blu ray, webcam.

Is there anything else we need to know?
Just point me in the direction of greatness.

I was looking into ASUS and Sager laptops. This laptop will last me for a good 5 years at best. Need it to have a good GPU, and CPU. What would be biggest difference between new and refurbished/re-certified? Any and all opinions and suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you guys!

I have a Dell Latitude E6510. ( http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latitude-e6510/pd ) I ordered it with the minimum hard drive and RAM, backlit keybaord, webcam, i7 dual-core @ 2.8Ghz, and Full HD display. I Googled a coupon code so it ended up being roughly $1100 for the laptop. Then I got a 120GB SSD from NewEgg, 8GB of DDR3 1333Mhz RAM also from NewEgg, and a 500GB secondary drive for use in a modular bay adapter I picked up from another site.

When all was said and done it cost me about $1700, not including shipping or warranties. But some of the parts I got might be had cheaper now since I got this almost 5-6 months ago now. I found it to be a lot cheaper to order the laptop and upgrade other parts separately.

Laptop Specs:
Core i7 dual-core @ 2.8Ghz
8GB DDR3 G.Skill RAM @ 1333Mhz.
120GB G.Skill Phoenix Pro SSD
500GB WD Black secondary drive
Full HD 1920x1080 Anti-Glare display
nVidia NVS 3100M 512MB
Intel Centrino Ultimate Wireless-N
Integrated webcam and back-lit keyboard
9 cell Li-Ion battery

I get about 2.5-3hrs of battery life under light use, closer to 1.5-2hrs if I'm running wireless and a VM up. The case is all metal and very solid. I have absolutely no complaints so far. This is my primary computer for college so it needs to last me. I'm currently running Fedora 13 x63 on it, but there's no doubt you'll be able to run Win7 like a pro

I highly recommend this laptop! Hope this helps! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

If I wasn't going to be gaming, then that would have been my choice. That 8159 looks sick! But after everything I wanted, it came to $2300 lol. My imagination flies when I customize laptops. I do it for fun sometimes >_>

Hey emc 2, What's the difference between the 8130, 50 and their S1 counterparts?

GT218 to be exact Yeah, that's the only thing. Great for me because I don't game much anymore and it's plenty for what I do under linux (3+ year old games in Wine and VM every now and then)

OP, how much do you plan to game on it?

EDIT:

Alot actually. I sometimes don't like to be tied down to my desktop.

8130 only has the GTX 460M and has a rubber finish.

8150 has no rubber finish. Can be equipped with the GTX 485M or the 6970M and XM CPU's.

S1's are pre-configured rigs with better components and oddly enough when you spec a regular config against a S1, the S1 is cheaper.
