Question about multi-platter sector allocation

I asked this before on another forum, but I don't think my question was understood so I'm posting it here with pics to illustrate. My question is: with a multi-platter hard drive how does the sector allocation work?

Is it progressive by platter,


or is each platter used simultaneously from the outside in?

Pics blocked at work.... but each platter is used from the outer edge inward.

I would have to say it would be simultaneously as you wouldn't be seeing the speeds on current hard drives probably if it only used a platter at a time for reads and writes. Also to support this would be the fact that all the hard drive heads are on one control arm. If it was progressive they would prob have made independent moving control arms for the heads if not, unless it just meant more moving parts more problems.

Awesome! You get my meaning. I considered that as well. A disk benchmark on a multi-platter drive would probably fluctuate rather than drop off towards the end like other drives if it were platter progressive. I never knew for certain, so I thought I'd ask.

I think he is referring to do they work as if like raid saying 2 platter disks use both platters to optimize writing throughput, or as they only use top or bottom platter first till its full then uses next platter.
I would think the blocks are spread across platters. I believe a file composed of 10 blocks would be written to a 3 platter disk would be:
Platter 1, Side A, Block 1
Platter 1, Side B, Block 1
Platter 2, Side A, Block 1
Platter 2, Side B, Block 1
Platter 3, Side A, Block 1
Platter 3, Side B, Block 1
Platter 1, Side A, Block 2
Platter 1, Side B, Block 2
Platter 2, Side A, Block 2
Platter 2, Side B, Block 2

Benchmarks on multi-platter drives drop off.
OK, so if I'm using the first 620GB or so on a 1TB 3 platter drive, all three will contain data rather than just the first 2, right?

yeah no matter what once you get closer to the inside of a platter speeds will drop off significantly about once its half way across the platters, like a 30mbps drop in my 1TB HD103SJ but my max is like 140mbps so its really not that big of a drop to me lol.

Pretty much, as spreading the data on all the sides of the platters would make more sense for speed purposes.
