Building 1st Rig - ~ $700 Budget

Greetings and salutations to everyone.

Spent about 2 hours reading these particular forums to try and copy a build but unfortunately everyone is different.

After trying other forums there are quite of few helpful people here on OC. (XD 1771 is all over the place ) Hopefully I'll be able to get some of the same support as others.

I like to be thorough so just about anything I type out is going to be long. Just a warning.

Briefly I want to state that I'm not necessarily a beginner but I'm not quite what I consider intermediate either. In between if you will.

I tried building a new rig back in 11/2010 but unfortunately my ASUS board is nothing but problems and ever since the CPU fried and the G.Skill sticks that were compatible are now no longer able to be used on my ASUS M4A89GTD PRO AM3 AMD 890GX HDMI SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard.

I'm at a crossroads to where I decided to forget ASUS as for months it's been a constant headache though I don't have anyone to help me, I'm all alone in what I'm doing here so it's huge problem solving scenario.

What I'm wanting to do now is build another rig since I flushed $600 down the drain. And sorry if the title is somewhat misleading but my first build is scrap in my eyes because it was a complete failure.

I'm looking for a computer that will not only work when I put all the components together but also gives it room to expand and last me about 2-5 years.

Here's what I've put together so far, but I'm still having trouble figuring out all the acronyms and what everything exactly means.

Tower (as tempting as it is to get a Full Tower the HAF 932 seems iffy on the I/O in the rear of the mobo): COOLER MASTER Storm Scout SGC-2000-KKN1-GP Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Mobo:
GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD5 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

CPU:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX

The only reason I went with the 955 was because I blew most of my money on my previous build and I wouldn't want to spend $160 for the 965 if this build isn't even compatible (I'm a little cautious after my first experience).

My PSU doesn't need to be replaced (IMO) but this what I already have:
Rosewill Xtreme Series RX850-D-B 850W Continuous

I still haven't figured out what GPU to get for the Mobo. I'm looking for something to play SC 2 and other games in High Settings / Ultra (if possible) and no lower than 30 FPS in the most demanding situations.

I nearly forgot, the RAM. I already have this and I was hoping it would be comaptible even though it's not listed in the QVL for the Gigabyte Mobo.

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

I have that and I also have this which is left over from my failed ASUS build:
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH

Lastly, my HDD already has Win7 on it but before I could finish the updates I got a BSOD before my CPU fried, so who knows what happened to it.

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

That's everything. I'll be checking this forum quite frequently especially if someone can be of assistance.

Thanks in advance!!

Personnally I would wait for bulldozer to drop before buying. Could be a good budget cpu in the line up

Asus is know for having good boards and the one you had is one of there better ones. I would try an rma on the mb ram and CPU from ur previous build first. If u can get it up and running u have 700 for upgrades instead of a whole new system.

No GPU?

Please, stick to black text. Blue hurts my eyes.
Oh, and I'd say wait for bulldozer. It is within 3 months and it should be comparable to sandybridge. Oh, and not to mention it should be an incredible overclock.

My first mobo was DOA and I RMA'ed it. My second one actually worked after 6 hours of messing with it back in November.

When I was installing Win7 on a blank 1 TB HDD it went to a BSOD and I tried tinkering with the DIMM slots and after turning off / on my computer within a short amount of time I may have burned out the 965 CPU.

So it's way past the time to return the board.

I've got two different kinds of RAM now with 8 gigs of the 1333mhz and 4 gigs of the 1600mhz.

I agree with you otherwise. I thought of doing getting another CPU to give it a shot again, but there's no guarantee it'll work. After I installed 4 G.Skills in the DIMM slots (1333) my computer wouldn't POST or even beep at me and the MemOK light was continuous.

Blue actually keeps my attention when reading. It's not too bright or dark. Plus it's my preferred color. Hopefully Navy blue is bit more easier on the eyes.

I'd like to wait and all but I have no computer. I'm using a friends and I posted the thread while at work.

Both the Gigabyte and ASUS have a 4290. Pathetic, but it's better than getting a GPU and finding out my parts aren't completely compatible.

Edit: You're right about the GPU. I was thinking of GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H AM3 AMD 890GX.

If u built it in November 2010 u are most definitely not past ur warranty. It's ur money but like I said rma it and spend it else where.

And if it fried ur CPU rma it also.

And while ur at it u might as well rma all ur ram

G.skill has a two year warranty. Amd has a year. And I believe asus is a 2 year

I'll try and give it a try. Going through Warranties has never been something I've had the patience to stomach.

So I'll probably get about half of what I paid into it. Even so I'd still be out a computer. It's one reason why I thought about just getting another GPU and testing it again.
