Gaming: Phenom II x2 555 BE or Athlon II x4 640 - Page 3

People need to stop recommending dual-cores now. No, there's not an 80% of unlocking. In reality it's around 60%. Second, all games from 2009 to now at least make use of three cores but not four. The extra core alone will result in 10-15% higher performance in games, while the extra cache will only yield improvements of around 8%. That, and more games are now multi-threaded. As a matter of fact, most games coming out this year are gonna use four cores. There's simply no excuse to go with a dual-core now. With the Athlon II X4, you're guaranteed four cores and more performance in games that were made from 2 years ago to now and for future games.

Don't go with any of the choices you listed.

Instead go with the Phenom II x4 820 which is better than both of those processors and still reasonably priced. thumb.gif

If for some reason you're limited to those 2, the Athlon is the better choice.

Unfortunately, the Phenom II X4 820 has been discontinued from Newegg. It was a great deal while it lasted, though. The Athlon II X4 is still much better than the Phenom II X2, though.
