AMD Phenom II 965BE Overclocking

Thread Starter
Hello there, I recently just hit 3.8 on stock voltage on my phenom II. Going for 4.0. The question I have is what program should I use to OC? I did the 3.8 through BIOS and now it doesn't lower the clockspeed at idle anymore[I don't need 3.8Ghz when I'm browsing.] Is there a way to resolve this? AMD overdrive doesn't let you mess with multipliers.

To my understanding you don't want to try to OC in the bios and use a third party OC'n software package. That said, all reliable OC's I have seen were done in the bios, and there you will be able to attempt to break 4.0. As far as your voltages your generally safe upto 1.5v maybe 1.55v without really going out of your way to cool off the motherboard (voltage regs), as far as idle and stepping that should be an option labeled C1 on/off, and for the most part I leave it on.

dont overclock that much with the stock cooler

watch the temps, max of 62c, keep it under 55c for stability

if you enable c1e and cool & quiet will lower the cpu mutli at idle, but will mess with stability
get it stable at the speed you desire, then enable c1e/c&q

but first get a better cooler
212+ might allow 4ghz, but h70, d14 or silver arrow will
post #4 of 8
1st. you'll need a better cooling solution to OC that high I believe. Definitly keep your cpu socket temp under 62c and better if it's no higher than 55c when under load.

2nd. Most CPU's won't allow Cool & Quiet to work going above the x18 CPU Freq multiplier. This is probably why you lost that option. 18 x 200=3600MHz, 19 x 200= 3800MHz or 3.8GHz. You'll have better performance if you use a higher Ref Clock and lower multiplier, 16 x 250=4000MHz or 4.0GHz and than you'll have the C&Q option back if you want it. Just be aware, raising the Ref Clock affects all other settings (CPU Freq, NB Freq, HT Link, and Dram Freq) so you may want to give this thread a good study http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ing-guide.html and get a lot of the basics down before proceeding further with your OC'ing.

Crank the vcore up to 1.5v and your multi up to 20 and let er rip! If it boots, restart and slowly lower the voltage downto 1.495. Repeat process until system fails to boot. Go back in to the bios and raise voltage up 0.05v and then start to benchmark the oc with prime95 or Intel Burn Test. Just make sure your temps don't exceed about 60 degrees for stability purposes.

Thanks for the advice guys. I installed a Hyper 212+ recently.

I want to get as far as possible without raising my stock voltage[1.375].

I read the thread that The Sandman recommended. Thank you.

Is there no way to get a multiplier of 19x without disabling Cool n Quiet? I want it to downclock my cpu when I am idle[I don't fold].

Here are my current numbers: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1760860

If you used 19*200 for the 3.8GHz the reason the clock speed doesn't lower anymore is because Cool n' Quiet automatically disables when the multiplier is greater than x18.

Rather than increasing the cpu multiplier just increase the Ref Clock for higher OC. This way C&Q will still work. Study that thread I sent you for more details, or feel free to PM me if you'd like more help.

Be aware when raising the Ref Clock it will increase CPU Freq, NB Freq, HT Link Speed and Dram Freq. Follow the steps below,

1st. Always maintain HT Link Speed - 2000MHz +/- 100MHz

2nd. NB Freq - high as possible (2600-3000MHz)
higher NB Freq requires more CPU/NB Voltage, start with 1.25v and max 1.4v to 1.55v depending on mobo.

3rd. Adjust (OC or tighten ram) last which may require Dram Voltage increase.

4th. Have fun! (and study that link lol)
