Severely damaged motherboard?

Thread Starter
Today I got my hyper212+ aftermarket cooler. I was eager to put it on.

I took off the stock cooler[no problem] and started fitting the motherboard with the new backplate/mounting solution.

Screwing the backplate to the mounting solution[goes through the board], I screwed a bit too hard on the screws[tight] and I saw the motherboard just under two of the screws warping in the direction of the screw. [Think of the motherboard peeling and warping under the screw.]

Is this an issue I should be worried about? Did I damage some important circuits?

Are you having any problems? Mine does the same thing, only because I haven't been bothered to mod the stock AMD back plate to make it work. Mine isn't having any issues, but tbh if it breaks its a good excuse to upgrade.

I don't think you should be worried much, as long this warping is localized at the screw point. I think that these points and their circumferences are used only for screws

dont worry about it even if it cracks as long as it all fits in a circle the size of a penny around the screw hole you will be fine. ive had screws crack the boards around the offset screws when using 10-24 button heads i tightened them down a little too tight and it cracked a little. and generally a penny sized circumference is standard because you wouldnt want the board to ground out to anything when mounting it in your case

I don't notice any problems. Even if there was a degradation of speed, I wouldn't notice as cpu activity is very subjective. Yours does the same thing? With the stock amd backplate? I thought you were using aftermarket water cooler.

Thanks for answering.

You should see my D14 warping my board...

It's normal..

be careful though i say the size of a penny for easy reference but i would honestly say its more like the size of say an average sized dykem paint marker they sell em at most art stores. but your situation sounds fine as long as it doesnt get worse if you have a few extra bucks go to lowes or home depot and pick up some small nylon washers you should be fine with 8 of them if im not mistaken most mobo cpu cooler mount bolts are either 8-32 or 10-24 you should be fine with size 10 nylon flat washers put one on the front of the mobo and one on the back were the pcb is just to give it some extra strength.

You didn't rip any threads out did you? and did you loosen it up a bit after you seen it warp?

ripping out threads would be difficult you would snap the motherboard clean through before you striped (ripped the threads) the bolts. unless op is using nylon bolts i dont see this happening. op would have to be yanking and tugging on the cooler for this to happen. it takes alot of force to strip a bolt that or someone who doesnt know right from left.

Just so there are no misunderstandings. The problem I am having is not the cooler bending the motherboard because it is too heavy. The screws that hold the cooler to the motherboard were screwed too tight and have scratched out the board underneath[the screws]

The backplate was successfully installed. Might not need the nylon washers. I posted because I was worried about possible damage to the circuit board. redface.gif

I didn't loosen it. What's lost is lost that has been warped. What exactly are threads? I didn't see anything flying into my face.

I think he's talking about the "motherboard threads" and not the bolt threads. am I right?
