Gaming rig: Upgrade to C2Q or save for i7

Thread Starter
Hey all, I'm starting to think my E8400, even at 4ghz, is starting to show its age, as more games are going to become multi-threaded.

I have three options, either I stick with my LGA775 system for a year or so longer by getting a Q9650 or Q9550 which are going between €180 (Q9550) and €220 (Q9650) online on ebay. And about €220 / €280 new.
This would just be a simple CPU upgrade

2: Get a new P67 mobo + ddr3 + i5-2500k which would set me back about €450 if I get 8gb ram €400 if I settle for 4gb.

3: Leave everything as it is no upgrade necessary, and go all out when Ivy bridge and lga2011 are available in 2012.

It really depends on you. Can you wait until the newer stuff is out or you have more money for i7? Do you have an itch to upgrade and it must be satisfied? I was happy with my Q9550 rig, but I had the itch. After reading how well the i5 2500k's overclock, and really wanting change, I bit the bullet and upgraded to what I have now. In all honestly, I'm VERY GLAD I DID.

So it's all about personal need/restraint. Life is short. Do what makes you happy.

I've got mixed feelings. I can honestly say that I have not a single app or game that raises a performance issue for my sig rig. And I'm the first person to buy new hardware if something seems to be lagging.

Then again with 775 being two chips behind, at this point I would not spend $$ on any new 775 hardware if I were in your position.

I'd move to 1155 if I were you right now. I myself am going to wait for 2011 'cause I have nothing left to upgrade.

Well I do kinda have the "itch" but I'm a student still so money is a bit tight. I'd like to say I could just save for a completely new i7 system, but it would be slow going. I guess what I'm asking is: is the performance I get from going from a 4ghz E8400 to a Q9550/Q9650 still worth it? Would it serve me well in upcoming games like BF3?

Your e8400 is not going to do much worse than a quad at this point. If you want to see if the upgrade for BF3 is worth it, WAIT until it comes out. It'd be a shame to waste money on a platform upgrade, if the upgrade doesn't yield the results you were looking for.

I went from an E**** Dual Core CPU and saw a HUGE increase in BC2 and with your GPU being a bit bottlenecked as it is, the increase would be even more significant.

It would absolutely suit you well to go to C2Q, if you can't afford to upgrade to new platform.

I've been in your situation MANY times in the past and I, typically, only change platform every 3-4 years, but upgrade a little along the way.
Pretty much the same situation as you a year or two back.

Bought a Q9550, Same mobo as you, got it to 4.0 no problems. Im even satisfied with GTA IV performance at this point.

I'll be upgrading when something truly awesome comes out.

I don't know about any specific game benefits other than GTA IV, since that's really the only game I play a lot to see a difference. I went from an E8500@4.0Ghz to a Q9550@3.82Ghz and noticed a nice difference. a few more FPS, an overall quickness of the OS and apps, and with the upgrade having been fairly inexpensive, I felt it was worth it at the time.

EDIT:

But i5 2500K's ARE 'truly awesome'.

Haha, this is true.

On the other hand, in the near future I'd imagine there are going to be similar CPU's that are even more awesome. I'd imagine this year or Q1 2012.
